This hotel is in an old building with a garden around, but still near central Stockholm. The place is beautiful and the rooms are charming, but the small cheaper rooms are really too small. It is very practical with the metro very near. The breakfast was nothing too special, but quite OK. It was very nice to be outside sitting with no cars around.

Room Tip: The smallest rooms are too small to be comfortable. Specify if you want rooms that are close or you could end up in different sides of the building.

My partner and I often stay in luxury hotels (for business or pleasure) but, because Stockholm hotels were very expensive, we looked for something less high-end and we feel we chose very well (using tripadvisor as our guide obviously!). The building is old and full of character and charm. The staff are very helpful and accommodating. The breakfast is good and on a sunny day can be taken in the yard at the back or the terrace at the front - the terrace is especially pleasant. We spent our first night in a standard room (515) but asked to move after the first night as the bed was too small for us so this is definitely worth bearing in mind. There was nothing else wrong with the room (if a little on the small side) and the large shower room was lovely. We moved to a superior room (103) which was lovely (bed was great) but it was opposite the room which the staff use for changing etc. so it was noisy early in the morning as the door was constantly opening and closing. Please don't let this put you off the hotel - just ask for a different room. The location is very much in a local, up and coming neighbourhood which we loved. It is about 30 minutes easy walk to the centre of the trendiest parts of Sodermalm where there are plenty of good restaurants (I can recommend Urban Deli for the trendy and Pelikan for those wanting authentic Swedish). It is a similar walk to the centre of Gamla Stan. We took the city bikes for 3 days which proved very useful although you need to be flexible (we did find the hotel's local bike stand empty one morning and one of the city centre ones full on another occasion). If not the metro is extremely convenient for the hotel.

We enjoyed our stay in this historical and charming hotel very much! I asked not to book us a room on the top floor, as there were some reviews that said the ceiling is very low on top floor, therefore not convenient for tall people. We got an excellent room on 3rd floor – spacious enough, clean and charming.
Nice staff at reception desk. Hotel is located in quiet residential area, only 1 block from metro station, so location was good as well. Breakfast was very nice and we had our breakfast in sunny, nice yard of the hotel. Good quality for the price we paid. We are definitely returning to this hotel on our next trip!!!

Room Tip: Rooms on the top floor are not convenient for tall people, as ceiling is low

We stayed here for 3 nights over the weekend at a cost of over £130 per night. Our room was so small my husband couldn't stand up straight in it as it was in the attic and very narrow. It was also so hot! I rang to speak with reception to ask if there is anything that could be done and they advised that because of the age of the building they couldn’t have air conditioning. We had to sleep with the windows open the whole time we were there to try and cool it down, great for security.

I can see it is a lovely building, just not sure what we did wrong to get such a bad room. We booked months ago! Have travelled a lot and but the price doesn’t equate to what you get here.
Breakfast was good and they do have free wifi throughout. It is a 30 min walk to the old town although the tube/underground is close. Reception was also very helpful with directions. However I’d look to get better value for your money.

Dear Andrew_Kellie

Thank you for taking your time to write this review about your stay. Feedback from our guests is very important to us and we find it important to communicate back to explain certain circumstances.

Hotel Hellstens Malmgård is as mentioned in your review situated in a lovely rebuilt mansion from 1770. It is a remarkable historic building which has been declared a cultural heritage site. Therefore the renovation of this house has been done very carefully. Due to this, the rooms are indeed very different and quite spectacular. A few are located on the top floor below the roof with wooden beams, like the room you stayed in, and some rooms are in fact small and narrow. Many others again are bigger.

To me this makes the hotel charming and something special, but I do understand if this was not ideal for you. We encourage our guests to communicate with the front desk if the room is not to their satisfaction as all rooms are quite different from one another. Our staff then does their utmost to find a room that suits the preferences of each guest. The hotel is equipped with a central cooling system that controls the temperature of the incoming air in all rooms but if the temperature in the rooms is still not to the guests’ satisfaction fans should be offered from the front desk.

As Stockholm is a very busy capital rates fluctuate in all hotels in Stockholm and as there was a big concert in Stockholm during this specific weekend rates were higher than usual.

Finally, we would like to thank you for your kind words regarding our breakfast, fast WiFi and service from our front desk and we do hope that you would consider staying with us again if coming to Stockholm or at one of our other hotels in town Rex Hotel*** and Hotel Hellsten****.

Kind regards,
Per Hellsten

Quite basic but picturesque building with lovely staff, a good breakfast and free coffee throughout the day. Good location too, near all the treats of Sodermalm and close to the subway. Came for business, but would definitely stay there as a tourist too.
