Owner description: The Old Town, unsurprisingly, is the oldest part of Stockholm. It's certainly the tourist's go-to destination, but that doesn’t detract from its architectural and otherwise urban beauty.

Lovely to walk around this charming area. Lovely little tourist shops and café's. Like the Store torg and Science Fiction shop best.

Almost every European city has it's Old Town left. Even in Germany. And me being a foreigner in Europe, always go to the Old town of the city to get a glimpse of the history of the town and also to just walk through the very old streets and allies with it's old buildings. Stockholm's Old Town also has it's own charm and the small boutiques and cafes and restaurants have a special charm. If you ever visit Stockholm, you can't go home and say that you were not in the Old Town of Stockholm. It's kind of like going to Paris and say that you didn't see Mona Lisa.

Lovely narrow streets and alleyways filled with touristy tit-tat, craft, antique and other shops in a maze and warren of little entrances and exits. In between there are grand Royal Palaces and Churches, narrow alleys widen out into grand squares and there is a constant hustle and bustle.

Stockholm has one of the best preserved medieval city centers in Northern Europe. Buildings are from ca 15th - 18th century mainly. Streets are narrow and often with cobblestone. Ornamentation around entrances are often impressive (esp from the 17th century). Here you will find a number of interesting churches, i.e. the Great Church (Storkyrkan), the German Church and Riddarholmskyrkan. The Royal Castle is also situated here with a number of museums. There are lots of restaurants and cafes but prices on the whole are very high. Many places have cellar vaults, e.g. Källaren Diana and Gyldene Freden. There are two long streets Västerlång and Österlånggatan respectively that have lots of shops many catering to tourists. I recommend Prästgatan if you want to see a street without modern aspects, there are no shops here which makes it quiet and gives you a better feel for how it used to be.

Neutral Sweden's capital escaped destruction in World War II, meaning they have one of the most beautiful old town areas in all of Europe. Old narrow stone streets, alleys, shops, restaurants. I just love this place! That's why I picked the Victory Hotel in Gamla Stan (Old Town) as headquarters for my January 2013 visit to my Swedish friends.
