Skanstulls Hostel
Certificate of Excellence
Reviewed July 23, 2012

I stayed at Skanstulls for three nights, travelling alone. The 4-bed rooms are small and clean, but like most of the hostel, don't get a lot of natural light coming through. The hostel amenities in general are well-maintained, bathrooms and showers were always clean. The staff are some of the friendliest I have come across in a hostel, and are happy to keep your luggage in a locked room before check-in and after check-out if your plans fall outside those hours. There is a common kitchen with a tiny fridge, stove and some basic utensils/crockery, and free tea for all hostel guests.

Each bed in the rooms has a power socket and a bed light. There are individual lockers in each room with padlocks, the keys for which are given to you by the staff along with your room key. There is free WiFi, but it seemed to not be functioning during my time there, it would work only near the reception. Ideally it should work everywhere in the hostel. There are a few communal computers available with internet, and a huge range of pamphlets/maps for Stockholm-based activities.

The hostel is in a great location for travelling into the centre of Stockholm and all around. The area itself is trendy with loads of interesting shops and cafes within walking distance. The Old Town and the ferry docks are a train ride away, that barely takes 10 minutes. Transport to and from the airport is really easy as well, thanks to the Arlanda Express.

Pros

- Rooms were clean and comfortable, with lamps over the beds and good sized personal lockers. Beds were very comfortable, which isn't that common in hostels I've stayed in! There also plenty of power sockets. There was also a table and chairs in the room and towel hook on the walls.
- Showers and toilets were clean and functionally. There was a lot of individual toilets for the number of people in this hostel. The showers were always hot.
- 5 minute walk to the underground 'T' metro line and around another 5 minutes on the train into central Stockholm.
- Friendly and informative staff
- Excellent new washer and dryer. You do pay 50 SEK for a wash and dry, but I'm willing to pay if the clothes are washed and dryer properly. Again, been in too many hostels where you have to put your clothes on 2 or 3 times in the dryer to get them dry
- Free WiFi in the rooms. The internet connection was quick and we had no issues with it.

Cons

- Several of the rooms come directly off the kitchen. This can mean that if you get people having a chat in the morning, you can hear the noise in the room. It wasn't too bad though and as many people say on these reviews, it is a hostel.
- The male showers could use some maintenance as some of the showers were missing separating screens and one of the shower curtain rails was held together with masking tape. The showers themselves though ran fine.

Overall had a good stay here and would recommend this place for a cheap place to lay your head.

Room Tip: Maybe request a room that doesn't come off the kitchen or is near the computer terminals.

This hostel finds itself in the Skanstulls area, a good 20 minutes walk to the historic city center. The staff was friendly and helpful, although they disappear from 8PM to 8AM with no way to contact them except for an emergency phone number. Standard hostel linen hire rates apply.

Our five bed room was a snug fit, but served its purpose. The hostel offers free public internet computers and an open kitchen that visitors can use. Free basic food items can be found here!

All in all a very good value in this expensive city, although the location could be better.

We stayed in a double with ensuite, so it was not in a dorm. The room was well appointed, pretty roomy and even though it had no window it was not stuffy. Bathroom was excellent. Very quiet in the private rooms, s much so we were oversleeping! Stockholm is a very expensive city and this was pretty much as cheap as you could get for a private bathroom room. Sodermalm is an accessible place to stay but not particularly attractive place. Very close metro and supermarket. Takeaway places close by and restaurants and bars within walkng distance, Very Cool shops nearby. Staff were very friendly and helpful. Hostel kitchen was very small and impractical but apparently they are opening a new one soon which should resolve that. all in all excellent stay

Stayed here 5 nights with a friend and as far as hostels go, it was a pleasant experience. Everyone we met was friendly, staff included (when they are on site - 8am-8pm). There's plenty of information on offer, including a useful noticeboard, free maps etc and various nice little touches around the place e.g a hairdryer in the bathroom, free tea, coffee and pasta(!) in the kitchen and pens and paper available for 'writing love letters'. There was a very mixed range of ages staying at the time and everyone was very respectful of other guests. We stayed in one of the 4 bed dorms which was ok in size. Each 'bed' had it's own locker and there was space under the bunk to roll cases away and keep the floor cleared. The common area and kitchen aren't the largest, but again, absolutely fine. We were actually out sightseeing most of the time, only really returning to sleep! The hostel is at basement level so the layout is fairly rabbit warren-like, but the space has been used well. There are plenty of toilets and the bathrooms (separate mens and womens) are a decent size. Probably the best thing about the hostel is its location. Sodermalm is a really interesting neighbourhood, the hostel is almost right next to a metro (and only 4 or 5 stops from the Central train station and next to numerous city bike stands. We actually only used the metro twice and covered a lot of ground on foot and cycling. Stockholm is a fairly expensive city and would definitely recommend the hostel as a great value-for-money option.

I stayed in this hostel because a friend (male friend) had recommended it to me. He said it was a nice hostel, where he met nice people, and the staff was friendly and helpful. Well, I would recomend it to another friend, but I would say different things. It is an average building for a hostel, I didn't met many interesting people (if compared to others hostels stays in my life) and I wouldn't say the staff is helpful because I barely saw anyone who worked there, and I didn't need help during my stay.
I would recommend Skanstulls hostel for the quality of the beds and the girls bathroom. The rooms and the kitchen are small, but the girls bathroom is big enough to be used by 4 or 5 girls at the same time (this was the maximum I saw), and we have enough space to put our things and hang our towels. There are 2 hairdryers too, and they are good. I am used to stay in hostels, and I miss hairdryer frequently... Some friends told me to buy a small travel hairdryer, but I am so lazy to carry one with me.

I was expecting a high-quality hostel (yes, I was aware that it is not a HOTEL), but was largely disappointed with my stay.
The only good side: location (walking distance from Gamla Stan).
The room was tiny, cold and floors dirty. Beds were blocking access to shelves and there was no space/place to put the luggage and/or the clothes. Kitchen was fine, but the washroom/bathroom facilities just bad. Most of the washrooms are near the dining area or open-access computers, so neither washroom users, nor people gathered in common areas feel comfortable. Bathrooms - "swimming pool-type", with common dressing room and showers separated only by curtains. No privacy at all, all this for no reason (same number of individual showers could fit in there).
Since staff leaves at 8 pm and comes back at 8 am, there is no apparent control over what's happening at the hostel outside these hours. People at the reception desk are friendly and helpful, but this did not prevent a slamming door making noise for two consecutive nights or a ... turd on the washroom floor for about a day.... (ok, this means that the guests are disgusting, but this does not excuse the lack of monitoring of common areas...)
I agree that finding a cheaper place to stay in Stockholm is difficult, but this place does not deserve a 5* rating at all...
