“GREAT atmosphere, good swedish comfort food.”
Reviewed March 11, 2014

I got turned on to this gem of a place because my swedish brother.in.law and his old school friends meet at the Pelikan every Thursday for happy hour. I have joined them several times and just love the atmosphere, the service, and the typical swedish fare that is all nicely done. There didn't use to be many PUBs to go to in Stockholm so the few that existed where spacious like the Pelikan. Now Stockholm is overrun with them but there's nothing like this updated classic fo get a feel for the real Stockholm.

“Old school Stockholm”
Reviewed March 11, 2014

of you want to experience the 20th century Stockholm food scene Pelikan is the place for you. Very good traditional food like it was before cross over experiments started to make us confused. Reasonably good service. If you are a tourist rhe BIG thing about Pelikan might be the atmosphere and premises - when you enter, you enter a "frog" (restaurant) that basically looks exactly the same it did a century ago. Consider that together with the quality of the food, the service and the prices, and you get good bang for your buck and a memorable experience to tell your friends about when you get back home.

“Good food, seem to serve all day”

Good menu despite usual Stockholm prices. Lots of local beers. Usually showing sport on the big TV's.

“An absolute must”
Reviewed March 8, 2014

I am from Canada and my partner is Swedish. We went there because I am soon returning home after 5 years of living here and I wanted to taste real, traditionnal swedish food for the last time. And Pelikan is just the right place for that. My partner ordered fried thick bacon in an onion sauce hoping it would taste like the one her mother made. It did. After a very good beer, I settled for the S.O.S. (see on the menu) and our charming middle aged waitress suggested that I have it with a little shot of Aquavit the way Swedish always do she said. I did. That woman named Lena is a lovely person, warm and really caring that you have a good experience. I suspect she has been there a long time because of lot of the patrons seemed to be regulars and knew her. I then had elk with kantarel mushrooms and potato 'grating'.
All in all, a very good experience there, eating and watching the locals and what they had on their plates!!! A young woman behind me was eating some sort of mush that looked not too apetizing but smelled heavenly. You have a mix of everything there:White heads, moms and daughters, mom, daughter and grand-daughter, women with friends and lovers too. And a big party of people seated on a long table near the entrance.) Just the way I like it. I describe all this because it is part of the particular charm of the place. Don't expect 'refined, new cuisine there. Expect the very taste of swedish home cooking the way it was and still is made.
However and this is in no way criticism, you must know that the place empty at 5 when they opened for the evening, was absolutely full by six thirty so our nice waitress couldn't spare time to do small talk with us anymore. One more reason to go early and get a feel of the place before action really begins. Oh, and you must also know that the sound level is fast getting high, not so much because people are loud but because of the beautiful, frescoed very high ceiling I think..so maybe it is not the best place for conducting a love affair! Don't let this deter you from having the Pelikan experience.
Chantal
tip: unless you go quite early on,I would strongly advise making a reservation

“A nice meal out Swedish style”
Reviewed February 18, 2014

Although this place isn't cheap, what you get for your money is very good. We had the meat balls, and roast elk both around 250 SEK each one more, one less but they were both absolutely delicious. We looked around other restaurants which weren't as nice this was actually a bit cheaper. The decor of the restaurant is lovely, and really makes the experience at Pelikan. There is a great atmosphere and plenty of locals. The service was a bit unusual, our waiter was not particularly attentive but seemed nice enough when he did actually speak!
