Owner description: The history of this legendary castle goes back 800 years. For a long time, Kalmar Castle was an important fortification and known as the key to the kingdom because of its strategical location. The Swedish-Danish border was located only a short distance to the south, because Scania and Blekinge were Danish territories at the time. Kalmar Castle was given its current design during the 16th century, when the Vasa kings Gustav, Erik XIV and Johan III rebuilt the medieval castle and made it into a Renaissance palace, furnished and decorated in continental fashion. Even before then the castle had played an important role in Nordic politics, for example as the location for the signing of the Kalmar Union in 1397. This event was celebrated during the whole year of 1997, the union's 600th anniversary. Kalmar Castle is a symbol for Kalmar. The castle's history features international politics, court intrigues, fiery sieges and fierce battles. Today the castle is vibrant and lively place where many people visit.

They put a lot of effort into the tour and keeping the kids entertained. Swedish only.

When we came in late June ,it was fun to see to see the kid themed activities .There was a handsome young knight who would engage a child under 12 in a soft duel-the kid always wins ! In another room ,your child would be costumed like a royal child for further photo opportunities . The first exhibit room on the left shows gruesome methods of torture -not advised for kids under 10 ! No sign telling you to avoid this with young kids . The castle is used for parties and conferences and is well maintained . Great but slow cafe across the street from entrance. Poor food selection at cafe .

Kalmar Slott is a very well kept castle. The whole castle trip was very informative with much to see and learn about in every room of the castle. In the courtyard was a jester and some wenches who were very friendly. They helped us into full dress knightly armor, as well as letting us joust the dragon that was in the courtyard. We all really, really enjoyed this part of our 10 day trip to Scandinavia.

The castle was a bit musty, as you might expect from a building that is so old. Very well kept, though.
