“Nice nautical material but could use better presentation”

The museum celebrates Karlskrona's past as a shipping port and manufacturing center. It has lots of exhibits on various maritime themes. One I recall as being especially interesting was about how ropes were made. But the exhibits are just that - items placed in a display, with some cursory descriptions. Then, after covering Sweden's part in the nautical era of the 1800's, the museum jumps to 1960's and submarines and the Cold War. That was a bit jarring and I did not get any context as to how Sweden got from there to here, or why. Another reviewer gave a nice review to a coast guard simulator that was not working when we were there (although it was also near closing time). Another mentioned an audio guide but we did not get that either - maybe they were just having an off day.

If you like naval history, don't miss this museum during your visit to Karlskrona, a 17th century naval base in the southern part of Sweden. The city of Karlskrona was founded in 1680 and during the following centuries military establishments dominated its life. The Marine museum is located in a rather new building situated on an island filled with memories of the Swedish Navy. You can study magnificent models of ships built by the famous af Chapman in the last decades of the 18th century and stroll around outdoor where some newer ships are open to visitors.
What I like most is the athmosphere on a sunny day. The sea around the island, the old buildings, varoius exposed artifacts all filled with modern life create a magnificent mixture of impressions. And if you are hungry do not hesitate to visit the restaurant in the museum's lobby. For a very moderate price you can enjoy the buffet where a number of regional specialities are offered. As a dessert you have to taste the ice-cream - home-made - and "hors concours" as they say in France.
Every time I visit this "smultronställe" as we say in Sweden I decide to come back and I do so, always do I discover something new. The environment draws you inevitably back and I would gladly after retirement have an apartment in the old buildings around the museum, now after restauration quite modern and certainly quite expensive.

It is a relatively new museum with a lot of marine exhibits. I would appreciate more descriptions in English.
There are few things which kids (but also adults) enjoy including very realistic coastguard boat simulation - really great thing.
They serve very good buffet lunches there.

A good place to spend a winter afternoon. Apart from the nautical theme, you will find lots of Swedish history, modern included (although that part of the exhibition was only in Sedish, and by the time we had gooten there, our free audio guide had run out of juice). Spooky underwater tunnel with view of the water - looking at the frozen surface from below. Bonus: after learning how to use a Jacob's staff for navigation, you can virtually shoot a cannon at a Danish man-o-war, with sound effects ...
