Elite Hotel Knaust
Ranked #2 of 11 Hotels in Sundsvall
Certificate of Excellence
Reviewed February 25, 2013

This hotel was a true gem, in the middle of Sundsvall, with attention to detail in the services and the facilities.

Others have already commented on the stunning central staircase and the lounges off the main lobby. All in all, they provide an atmosphere which is worthy of classic, and much more expensive, hotels at which I have stayed.

The service was excellent with easy check-in, helpful staff providing advice on local restaurants, points of interest, and comprehensive review of the services available at the hotel.

I found the range of fitness equipment, and the overall fitness centre, more than acceptable and the facilities associated with the centre quite clean. While the range of equipment was not extensive (basically 3 machines and some free weights if I remember correctly) it was accessible 24/7 and more than met our needs.

The breakfast was included in the room and was extensive with a wide range of breads, cereals, cheeses, and great coffee/tea. Free wifi was also available.

Overall, I highly recommend this hotel whether you are a leisure or business travel. You will not go wrong.

Even by non-Swedish prices, this hotel was reasonably costed and considering the extensive range of services, the overall atmosphere, and the inclusion of both breakfast and wifi, it was extensive better priced than many Swedish and non-Swedish hotels.

This is an great hotel, and is much cheaper than it looks. The first thing that greets you as you enter is the fantastic staircase - it's design is amazing.

I've stayed here twice now, and both times I was very impressed. The staff are very friendly and helpful. Breakfast is plentiful and delicious, including standard Swedish offerings such as fish, meats, cheeses, and breads, plus eggs, bacon, sausages, etc for the greedier amongst us. Healthy people will like the fruits an yogurts. Plus juice, tea, and obviously (for Sweden) lovely coffee. The only criticism I have is that it's a bit dark in the breakfast room (or at least it was in winter, when I visited).

There's an "English" pub (The Bishop's Arms) attached to the hotel, which you can reach from a not very well signposted blue door near the conference rooms. By "English" I mean that they've gone totally mad decorating it - horse brasses, mantel clocks, fabric lamp shades from the 70s, Princess Diana plates, the works. It looks like they've gone to every pub in England and come back with a souvenir from each! The food here is good (if a little pricy) and they have a huge selection of delicious beers. Again, like the breakfast room though, it's a bit dark, but so are a lot of English pubs so maybe it's deliberate.

The single room I had on my last visit was a bit small, but the double room I stayed in previously was more than adequate. Perfectly clean too, with lovely underfloor heating in the bathroom. Important when it's -20 outside! The rooms are quiet, and the beds comfortable.

The hotel is located in the centre of the town, which is very picturesque, particularly at Christmas time if it's snowing.

Room Tip: The rooms looking onto the central courtyard don't have much of a view, but they are very quiet.

Very comfortable hotel, in the middle of town. Good staff, clean rooms.
It's elegant and even woth a visit if you're not staying there, especially because of the magnificent stairs in the hall. If you seek a beautiful place to stay in the city centre, this should be your choice!

This is a lovely old property, right in the middle of Sundsvall and beautifully restored. Staff were very friendly and helpful, organising a taxi to collect me from the airport and fixing my wifi (my pc, not their system!).

I paid extra to get a superior room, which was a cool duplex with upstairs bedroom - a lovely mixture of traditional building and Scandinavian chic. Hotel was the quietest I have stayed in for a long time!

Breakfast is a bit busy and rushed, with limited choice, but no worse than other Swedish hotels (some worse and way more expensive!).

Most Elite hotels have the advantage of being attached to a Bishop’s Arms pub and this one was right in the hotel basement !! Great beer and surprisingly fine food, not like pub grub at all (e.g. crayfish soup!!). English real ale lovers, check that you’re getting proper cask conditioned stuff, as the handpumps can be misleading – nothing wrong with the quality or choice, though! Only downside is the sometimes agonising wait for service! If you want to try outside, there are many bars (including a brewpub) and restaurants in easy walking distance.

All in all, a great place to stay.

I loved this grand city centre hotel. Part of the Elite group, you can expect a high standard, but this one tops most as its public areas are grand and either well preserved or cleverly recreated.
The rooms are standard fayre, but well appointed and always clean. The consumables are of a high standard. Water, wine and a mini bar although swedishly expensive, are welcome.
Breakfast in the dining room is a typical buffet, with less emphasis on cooked foods, rather a splendid display of everything else including an orange juicer. Yum.

My husband and I spent the weekend at this hotel and were extremely pleased with their service. The receptionists were very professional and there to make our weekend pleasant. The hotel is beautiful with an old classic charm and very affordable. Their breakfast was also very nice. We enjoyed our stay and wouldn't hesitate to stay there if we're ever in Sundsvall again. Highly recommended!

The hotel choices in the city of Sundsvall are quite slim regarding ok standard, and I would say that this hotel or the Clarion hotel are the only ones that have the nouns clean, not-smelly, service-minded, insect-free and inviting in common. I stayed in a suite which was ok, but not really price worthy. It was a duplex and the staircase up to the sleeping area was extremely steep and it is not possible to bring a suitcase up there.

The service is good, yet not great. The buffet breakfast is freshly served and they did top up to my satisfaction, which is quite unusual at Swedish hotels. The wine lounge is cozy, but they only have one choice of red, one of white and no champagne/sparkling wine by the glass, which is pretty poor.
