Owner description: Come along to the world’s largest underground iron-ore mine. We go by bus directly from the Tourist Center into the mountain and down to the show mine LKAB’s Visitor Centre at level 540 metres. Here in Kiruna much revolves around our mine. The guide will talk about modern mining and how it can cause a whole town to be moved. Coffee and cookies will be served in the cafe. A warm welcome!

It's not every day that you can get driven in a bus so far underground. The tour was pretty interesting, heavy going on all the mineral and equipment info but it was worth going to learn more about Kiruna and how the mine works, even if it was a bit of a publicity campaign for the mine company (we were talking to some locals later who told us about the work accidents that sometimes happen there so it's not all fun and games down there). Our guide was excellent and although it might be a bit dry for some kids, most of them enjoyed playing on the machines.

The tour doesn't run every day so it's worth expressing your interest to the Kiruna tourist office early as whether or tour will run will depend on how many bookings they have.

It's decent value too considering the price you pay for most other activities in Kiruna.

Going to Kiruna and not visiting the mine is a bit like going to London and not visiting Buckingham Palace or the Houses of Parliament. The LKAB mine is the very reason Kiruna exists and everything in the town has been influenced by the mine. The mine itself dominates the Kiruna skyline but the tour takes place 500 metres below the surface in a "mine museum". I booked the tour via the Kiruna Tourist Office website and it was easy enough to do. On the day, myself and other travellers were picked up by an English speaking guide from the Tourist Office in Kiruna and driven by bus to the museum. During the visit, there was a short video in the underground cinema (which was really cool!) on the history of mining in Kiruna, and then the guide walked us around the museum/an old mine explaining how iron ore mining occurs and showing us equipment used in the process (from old hand drills, to modern giant remote operated drilling machines). The tour was a great insight into the importance of the mine in Kiruna's past and in its future (Kiruna is sinking due to the mining and the company is paying for the entire town to be relocated). I think some people were under the impression that this was a tour of the "working" part of the mine (located about 1500 metres below where we were) but it was never sold as this, and was instead a tour through an old mine shaft with an examination of the history of the mine/the equipment used. Do not therefore expect to see mining in operation. Overall, the 3 hour tour was enjoyable distraction when in the quiet town of Kiruna and provided a nice insight into mining/Kiruna itself.

We visited the LKAB mine in March of 2012 and absolutely loved it. It was a very unique experience being able to go into such a deep mine and to learn about the history of such an important piece of history in this part of Sweden. There are lots of pieces of old mining equipment to look at (and you can actually sit in them as well) and also a great museum of old artifacts which shows a lot of the history. We took the English tour and our guide was very knowledgable and made our trip quite enjoyable. Highly recommend this to anyone (even if you aren't really into mining at all).
