A delightful walk following the stream right to the source at the amazing Hamurana Sprind, the walk takes you thru' magnificent Redwoods and the return walk can be thru' the newly developed "Trees for Travellers" - a grove being developed by the Hamurana trust. Well worth the time, but sorry - there are no wild things when you take this walk on the wild side.

Hamurana springs is quite a unique place. We didn't find this place when we were looking for it the first time but luckily we went back to try finding it again. It is so serene and beautiful. The underwater plants (not sure if they are algae or something) combined with the amazingly clear and blueish water make for an amazing scenery. The water is really beautiful. Trout can be spotted in the water too if you have a keen eye and patience. On top of that, this place also has a small area of redwoods, so it's a bonus. This place is free to visit and there's ample car park. We loved it so much we went back there 3 times to take photos in various lights (morning and later afternoon). It is located just next to the golf course, on the other side of the road from the big lake.

We visited Hamurana Springs only by accident as we were passing over the bridge on the main road north of Rotorua. We could see lots of ducks swimming around the stream, so we turned back to investigate. We were very surprised to see a lovely clear stream and the sign indicating a short walk along the bank. As we walk beside the stream we could see big trout swimming around. There was a sign further back which said "No fishing past this point". Before long we were walking among gigantic Californian Redwood trees and it seemed like we were in a scene out of the Hobbit movies. We had lots of fun taking some great photos among the trees. Finally we continued our walk and came to the magic place were the spring comes out of the ground. We continued around the head of the stream past some great little spots and decided to walk around the other side of the bank. This side was not as nice, but you could look back towards the trees and stream and get some great photos. This place is not advertised much to tourists but I guess in the summer it would be a very popular place for the locals for swimming and picnicking. We had visited Rotorua at least 2 or 3 times previously but had never heard of the Hamurana Springs, but have since told all our family and friends. After spending a fair bit of money visiting the main attractions in the town we were happy to find a FREEBIE.

And it's free. Whenever we visit Rotorua we make a point of taking time out to visit this beautiful tranquil spot with majestic Redwood trees and crystal clear water. The colour of the water in parts is a cool aqua colour with varying shades of green grasses swaying in the currents. Well worth a visit to this unspoilt spot - the only facility that needs to be there is a toilet please!

I'd never heard of Hamurana Springs but it was so idyllic and amazingly clear. I would go back again. Wrap up warm in winter though!
