“Most cosy homestay I've ever been to”
Reviewed March 24, 2012

My friends and I were completely mesmerized the moment we stepped on the cobbled passage of Broekhaven Country Cottage. The cottage was absolutely clean, dustless and spotless that we were so afraid to stain anything. The owners were so warm and hospitable, they provided us with farm-grown fruits and home-made bread and jam. Their apples were the juiciest I've ever tasted. We were surrounded by scenic farm view and adorable farm animals such as goats, lambs and chickens. There was even a complimentary farm-animals feeding session. This place left a lasting impression for us and is highly recommended for those who wishes to have a cosy and comfortable farm-stay.

Room Tip: There seems to be only 1 cottage.

It's one of the best place I've been during my trip in New Zealand. Home made bread, organic eggs and fruits and the best home made croissant full of jam. A really nice cottage with everything you need, especially if you travel with kids. My 2 years old daughter was in paradise with a lot of space to run around and a lot of animals to play with and feed. Really I recommand to everyone to go there, you won't regret it....

We really enjoyed our stay, especially the fresh-baked bread (you can request whatever kind you like, my son was partial to the cheddar-bacon!). Even my 13-year-old was charmed feeding the lambs and rabbits, and gathering eggs from the henhouse. The cottage was very comfortable, even in chilly weather, and Debbie and Ed were very helpful, especially when NZ's "biggest winter storm in living memory" caused us to alter our itinerary and stay on an extra day.

It was truly excellent and much larger than the photos suggest. Absolutely spotlessly clean and fully equipped with washing machine, BBQ etc. Freshly baked bread from Debbie together with fresh eggs straight from her chickens made it stay to remember. We had only booked for 2 nights and asked about extending the stay for one more night - we were in luck as it was the only free night in February! Debbie is very helpful and booked trips for us

Hamurana is located about 7kms outside of Rotorua on 2 acres of farmland which we initially thought might bother us but it didn't as everything else makes up for it. We had been travelling around the North Island for almost 2 weeks & experienced a couple of not so great stays ... Broekhaven was a breath of fresh air "literally". Everything we found here was just what we all needed at this leg of our journey ... comfortable & clean accommodation, great food (yummy baked bread, pastries & fresh eggs for breakfast daily), beautiful surroundings, warm friendly people, family pets & farmyard animals. The biggest bonus for us being the owners teenage son who provided our teenage son with some wonderful company during our stay which we really appreciated as he was getting quite bored with us by this stage. The little touches definitely went a long way to making Broekhaven the most memorable & enjoyable stay of our trip ... certainly a credit to the wonderful family who owns it. Debbie, Ed, Luke & Elise ... thank you so much for sharing your lovely home with us & for making us feel so welcome. We truly hope to meet you again someday.

We were honeymooning in NZ and wanted to experience a farm stay for at least two nights. After going through at least 50 different farm stays on http://www.tourism.net.nz/accommodation/farmstays/ we narrowed down on Broekhaven and are extremely happy to have done so. I have, since then, been pushing all my friends to go to NZ for a vacation and specifically stay at Broekhaven, that is if they have accommodation available, as being award winners for several years they are usually booked out.

The farm is on the north side of the lake in Rotorua, about 15 mins drive from the town centre. The Agrodome and other attractions are nearby as well.

When we reached the farm we knocked on the doors of our host and were met my the most delicious smell of freshly baked bread. To our delight they were baking the bread for us. Hospitality at its best.

We had a separate cottage on the farm which was surrounded by sheep (obviously they were on the other side of the fence). We had one big living room with an open concept kitchen, a big bathroom equipped with a washing machine and a big enough bedroom. The house had all other amenities such as dvd player, iron/ironing board, utensils. The hosts had left some kiwi preserve and jams in the fridge along with milk, butter and eggs for next day's breakfast. And.......freshly baked bread.

We ate breakfast on the table in the lawns outside the cottage in the company of sheep and took in the views of the lake.

On the day of departure my wife and I were taken along for a guided tour of the farm where we fed the sheep, the poultry, played with a rabbit and learned first hand from Ed how the sheep were reared.

Debbie, the host, bakes wonderful croissants and we shamelessly went back the next day to request for more, and I recommend to whoever has booked a stay at Broekhaven to do so for at least two nights and request Debbie in advance to send some croissants across instead of a loaf of bread.

Nice cottage--comfortable with a great setting. Hands on feeding of the farm animals and wonderful hostess. Two baby lambs made the experience extra special. A little surprised to make our own breakfast within our little cottage but nice in its own way. Clean and spacious. Washing machine to do laundry was a bonus! 15 minutes from downtown Rotorua.
