Owner description: Experience the unique joy of traveling along a railway line in your own powered self-drive railway vehicle, called a RailCruiser. The RailCruiser is a fully automated, state of the art petrol-electric four seat self-drive railway vehicle, with comfortable seats and unobstructed views. It is fitted with clear drop down waterproof sides. Departing from Mamaku Railway Station travel 10km through a majestic 1000 year old native forest, past rolling pastures with views out over Lake Rotorua to Tarukenga Railway Station. After a short break at Tarukenga whilst the RailCruisers are turned, you return in your RailCruiser back to Mamaku. Cruising along at 20km/hr, you can listen to the audio tour. This is the ultimate way to experience a railway.

This is one stop not to be missed if you are a rail fan. This ride is a great way to spend some time riding the rails and seeing the country in a self drive rail car. The cars have side curtains when the weather wet or cold. It like going for a drive in the country.
The length of the trip is just about right for a family with young children or people with limited love for railroads. The high tech work that has gone in to cars make them seam very safe. The on board commentary tells you about the area you are passing through wile going both ways. I wish we did not have to go half way around the world to ride these.

Got to say I was a bit skeptical about going on this as it seemed a bit pricy for the family and was not sure my two 13 year old twins would like this.
We bit the bullet and were all truly amazed.
This is just an amazing experience,,, traveling along in this little car all alone on the old rail line through the country side.

The cars are using 100% Kiwi technology and the cars are built in Auckland.
The cars even have a clever little hybrid drive motor.
The cars are computer controlled with two way radios if you have any need, and all you have to do is use the hand brake at the station.
My 13 year olds thought it was "brill" and its not often they both agree on somthing.

What a brilliant idea and we recomend to all to give this Kiwi idea a try.

I truly hope your idea and technology is patented as this idea will catch on across the planet with all the old unused rail lines about.
I do still think having rubber tires fitted over the existing metal wheels would save you a lot of track and car maintaince.

Having last visited New Zealand in 2005 to travel by Steam I came across this fairly new Railway orientated attraction while visiting the Rotorua tourist information office . I would recommend booking to ensure you are guaranteed a ride as maximum capacity appears to be around 40 passengers per trip which takes around two hours
We were met on arrival by two ladies Collette and Heather who went out of their way to explain the history behind the venture, what we would see along the way and because I am involved with a heritage steam railway in the UK the electronic involved in how this new railway concept works.
The Cars only seat four and you are fully enclosed if inclement weather. We travelled on a hot summers day in January with the sides rolled up
The commentary along the way together with the complimentary drinks offered at the start add to the experience
I rate this very highly and compliment those who have put the money up to achieve a thoroughly enjoyable and recommended excursion for anyone with an interest in Railways

I was impressed with the technology used to make this unique attraction however if you are not a train spotter save your cash. $150.00 for a couple is about twice the amount l thought it was worth.

Most customers come to experience the unique joy and freedom of riding along a railway in their very own powered rail car. ‘Train spotters” whilst large in number, represent a small percentage of our customers.

I appreciate you were impressed with the technology and thought the experience was worth at least half of what you paid. The price unfortunately reflects the reality of costs to resurrect an abandoned 48km railway, design and construct the world’s first RailCruisers and provide ongoing track and RailCruiser maintenance and finally the cost to provide daily excursions. Regards Neil.
