“unique train ride”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed December 7, 2013

At $76 per adult, its not exactly a cheap attraction. However, its sort of unique and interesting. Took 1.5hours to travel to/back on the 10km track and we got to have the "cart" to ourselves for the entire journey. An interesting way to enjoy the scenery of the area.

“Rail Cruising - Mamaku”

This was a fantastic way to spend a lazy morning, Very relaxed and a great way to see a part of NZ that you wouldn't normally get to enjoy. As no one has to concentrate on driving you can all look at the gorgeous scenery instead. The staff were lovely, helpful and interesting.

“Our hybrid train ride”

Well from start too finish, it was a great experience.
The train takes around a hour.
The husband and wife team that run it were lovely. The train is something everyone should experience if never been in one before, it gives the feel of what it used too be like.
In the train it is self running, plus there is a running commentary of the rail and the area around at the time, how it all started.
The price for this is reasonable as it does take around 1-1.5 hrs...

“A unique rail experience”

Something you will find hard to experience elsewhere. The 4-seater railcruisers are very comfortable, warm and have plastic covers on the sides to keep you dry. Very necessary as we found out!

Couple of tips for the owners; issue a nice souvenir ticket as a keepsake of the trip, have some souvenirs at the station such as postcards, and place your speaker in the railcruiser where ALL can hear the commentary, as positioned at the back it is very hard for those in the front to hear. I know you haven't been open for very long but these are simple and inexpensive improvements that will enhance a visit.

Overall I would recommend the trip but as one commentator has already said, it isn't a cheap outing by any means, but we must remember it would have taken a lot of set-up costs. $76 for a 90 minute experience ($58 for a senior) has to be weighed up as far as value goes.

The operators were very welcoming and friendly as was the complimentary tea/coffee on the cold day we visited. Go along and see for yourself. I hope you enjoy it as our group did.

“What a great idea”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed October 16, 2013

Found this a bit by accident whilst trying to find a railway trip in New Zealand. We're really glad we did find it and try it. Not the cheapest attraction in the area (but the owners did spend over NZ$1M putting it together) but really worth it.

The "train" is individual cars which trundle along at about 20km/h down a 10km track and back again. The cars are computer controlled (you have to work the handbrake, that's it), take 4 people and provide you with a commentary as you go along. Take a warm jacket as it gets breezy, but other than that just sit back and enjoy the trip.

The staff were all very friendly which made it even better. They even give you free coffee!

The owners seem to have thought of every possible problem and provided a solution, from blankets in the cars to keep you warm to a two way radio in case anything goes awry.

A fantastic way to spend a couple of hours - but do remember to book ahead. Incidentally they answered the phone (a free number) at gone 9PM for our booking.
