Owner description: Experience the unique joy of traveling along a railway line in your own powered self-drive railway vehicle, called a RailCruiser. The RailCruiser is a fully automated, state of the art petrol-electric four seat self-drive railway vehicle, with comfortable seats and unobstructed views. It is fitted with clear drop down waterproof sides. Departing from Mamaku Railway Station travel 10km through a majestic 1000 year old native forest, past rolling pastures with views out over Lake Rotorua to Tarukenga Railway Station. After a short break at Tarukenga whilst the RailCruisers are turned, you return in your RailCruiser back to Mamaku. Cruising along at 20km/hr, you can listen to the audio tour. This is the ultimate way to experience a railway.

The 4 seat rail car is computer controlled, driven at 20 km/hr. One of us assigned to hold the break in emergency. We traveled through farms and had a quick peep of the lake. In one backyard close to the rail track, we saw some chicken living in a sub- standard environment with broken, rusty cars lying around. We felt sorry for them.

There can be hard to listen to the commentary because of the noise from the moving rail car and where you seat. When we got to Tarukenga Station, staff turned the rail car around to head back to where we started.

The scenery is not that stunning but it might be good to try the rail car once. We do not think it is worth to spend $190 for us, a family of 2 adults and a child, to do it again.

As other reviewers have said this is very technological experience in these automated small cars that travel on a disused railway through farmland and native bush. The commentary was very helpful in understanding how it all worked and in understanding the time, effort and expense that has gone into this venture. The owners are very friendly and helpful.

This is NZ ingenuity and number 8 wire thinking at its best!!! Well done guys and I hope you prosper.

Despite the rain it was a lovey and unique way to see some NZ bush , forest and farmland.

The staff were very friendly and when out of their to make us feel welcome and at ease. For those that may not be able to walk far and yet still wont to get a view of our might Rimu go and enjoy.

We will be back!!

This is one of the most novel uses of disused railway lines, a great deal of time, money and research has gone into this attraction. The only improvement would be to have the speakers for the commentary placed a little higher for those of us who are now getting a little hard of hearing.

This was a great experience. Hard to describe but basically you are in a state of the art 'pod' that follows the route of the railway line through native bush and past a marae, sheep, deer and more. Great commentary, fantastic service, very interesting and unique experience and a way to experience the natural beauty of Rotorua.
You can pull down the sides and turn the heater on, but best to bring a jumper.
We recommend packing a bottle of wine and a cheese board. Mmmm.
