“Little Gem right in the middle of Crete”
Reviewed October 9, 2013

We might have missed this little town - we think a Spa resort. The fountain was remarkable in that it was the only flowing water we had seen. We enjoyed a walk around the village - it was considerably cooler here than near the coast and we were glad we had brought fleeces. I would imagine Spili is not an easy place to find parking at the height of season - the car park is only small and roadside parking is scary as the main road through Spili is quite narrow. Above and immediately behind the fountain is a little restaurant (up steps) the balcony and steps of which are festooned with pot plants and flowers. We were made extremely welcome and had a lovely meal. It was so nice we came back another day (a drive of an hour and a half). A lovely little town - with a fountain - and definitely worth a visit. There is a monastery, a health spa and other attractions as well as a fabulous view and some touristy shops where we bought some local honey. The fountain itself is just was it says a series of lion heads spouting water - no big shakes - but Spili is very nice nevertheless. I cannot remember the name of the restaurant but it will come to me later.

“Water and ice cream”
Reviewed August 8, 2013

When you drive from Rethymno to Agia Galina crossing the Crete Island, after few small villages, in a mountain area, it appears a cozy village situated on a cliff, Spili. If you cross in the morning stop only few minutes to admire the sunlight and the shadows. But if you cross in the afternoon you should stop to spend at least one hour here. Near the city hall there is The Lion Fountain (or 25 Heads). In the hot air of the afternoon enjoy the fresh, cold water in the trees shadow. It is a wonderful feeling. Don’t forget to enjoy at the neighborhood terrace the local yogurt ice cream with honey and nuts. And if you still have few minutes take a short walk around. I hope to be more expresive adding the photos.

“Very good clean water”

Our Lonely Planet suggested stopping here to fill our water bottles.

We stopped and filled and the water was excellent.
