“Acapulco Resort in Girne”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed October 18, 2012

My daughter and I stayed for 3 nights in Acapulco Hotel in Girne last August.
The location of the hotel is really very nice.Especially the beach and the sea is unblievable. You don't want to go out of the water. The water is really very warm and the sea is clean.
I would highly recomend that you must stay in the new building not in the small houses in the garden. We stayed in the new building. The rooms are clean. The food is good and delious.
But the workers of the hotel are very unhappy and you feel the negative atmosphere everywhere.
I wouldn't stay in this hotel once more.

Room Tip: a room in the new building certanly

We read a number of reviews on Tripadvisor before booking this hotel as part of a package. I suggest you read the other reviews and follow your instincts. North Cyprus is an attractive destination and there are hotels to suit most tastes. This is a large hotel and so not somewhere to go to getaway from it all. If you want to sunbathe and not think too hard about your dinner choices, you can do a lot worse than stay here.

Accommodation: We booked into the new block, and were rewarded with sea views and a peaceful and newly refurbished room. The rooms overlooking the pool also overlook the disco at night, and the bungalows are not in the best nick.

Food: The breakfast and dinner buffets offer a variety of options and the quality of the food and service is not at all bad given the scale of this hotel. There are some nice tables overlooking the bay slightly away from the throngs. Do not expect a full english breakfast, but do expect some unruly kid to push in front of you at any and every opportunity.

Services: The large pool and beach are clean, there are always enough sun beds to go around, and free beach towels. The poolside entertainment is nothing to write home about, but there are water slides and a games area (not free). At night you can check out the smoky casino and a couple of bars. The pool bar is slightly cheaper for lunch than the beach bar.

Room Tip: New block rooms with sea view

I spent 6 days in Acapulco in October with my mum.I chose Acapulco as I have been there 3 times previously and I always had a good experience. However this time it was terrible. Where shall I start. Well first of all we were given a room in the new hotel, at first the room looked very nice however after 10min of being in the room, things started to go wrong. There was not enough towels in the room, the aircon wasn't working, the tap in the shower got blocked. One after another.... I called the reception and they had the aircon fixed but it broke everyday! the service guy came to fix the tap, but still blocked, I had to call them again to get it fixed. After the second time we had success with the tap. However aircon broke everyday!
Not enough towels left most of the time and I had to ask the room keeper for it.

When it comes to eating area; it was packed everynight, if you go at 8pm, there is little chance you would get a table. The food was very poor as well.

I paid for Internet in my room and they also made a mistake with that. I paid for 5 hours however it ran out sooo quickly. The answer I got from reception was that I used it for 5hours and there is nothing they can do.

I also paid for a massage in the SPA for myself and my mum for 1.5hours. However my mum's massage only lasted 60min so I had to fight to get my money back.

All in all, very crowded, poor service, and nothing like what it used to be.

good sides: very nice &clean triple room in Pine Court building which is the nicest building of the hotel. Food is excellent, there is a choice of literally everything for every taste, waiters are nice and polite despite the fact that there is a very large number of people in the restaurant (there is only one). Cihan - our favorite waiter was absolutely the best! The trip to Karpas was wonderful and our guide Onur made the day interesting, fun, educational, relaxing - all of it despite the unbearable weather (40 degrees Celsius). He is the best tour guide ever!

bad sides: the weather is unbearable in July/August, there is no natural shade in the whole resort where you can "hide from the burning sun", The Wi-Fi is at extra cost (high cost) which is not a 5 star standard at all - everywhere in the world the wi-fi is now free, even in coffee bars. The shuttle service to Kyrenia town is good but operates only until late afternoon, so using it for evening walk to town is not an option. Reception staff not very helpful, did not give information about the resort or the area nor did they give messages that were left to them. The indoor pool was under construction, the spa very small and not attractive. In total, not a 5 star standard.

First the rooms. We were originally in a bungalow. It can be best described as spartan. The nearest to it was on safari in South Africa in a compound on a game reserve. It was clean but with one small window, no patio, not even a chair to sit on, We stayed a total of 10 minutes and upgraded (at an additional cost of another £160) to the Pine Court. What a difference. Nice large new room with balcony and side sea view. Well worth it.

All the staff were friendly and helpful and most spoke at least some English. The restaurant staff less so and the service varied from excellent to bloody awful depending on the waiter. At times I thought that we had become invisible as no amount of waving could attract one.

The meals were generally pretty awful, salads the same every day, main courses that seemed to be every kind of cheap stew with the odd bit of barbecued chicken or beefburger. But it was the other guests' behaviour that was appalling - but not all by any means. They consisted mainly of a volatile mix of Turks, Iranians, Iraquis, Syrians and Russians - with a few Brits.

At every meal they took loads if food to the table and then left more on the plate that they ate, scooped rolls, cakes and fruit into bags for later snacks and seemed to have no control over their children, most of whom seemed to spend every meal time running wildly around the restaurant with their parents following them with spoonsful of food.

We saw one old lady scoop about a dozen rolls and cakes into her bag followed by a couple of pounds of apples. I think that she was running a stall on the main road!

Don'y buy a bottle of wine in the restaurant. The waiter just looked gormless when I asked him for a wine list - it transpires that it consists of red, white or rose! I ordered one blind and got a bill for 50Tl ( about £18 for some nameless Turkish white)

For the first few days, we could find seats and then the middle five it was grab a chair and one get the food while the other ordered the drinks and guarded the table. Meals were more like a rugby scrum and being polite was definitely seen as a weakness.

The hotel is ideally situated on the beach, but down a steep incline to get to it. Not for the unfit.

Again, the first few days, sunbeds were relatively easy to find, but the middle days there seemed to be an influx of guests and we had to resort to the German towel trick at sparrow's fart. Try for the beds on the grassed area. The beds are excellent and spaced out. The beds round the pool looked as though they had been placed by someone used to filling sardine tins and the ones on the beach had sunshades no bigger that a large hanky.

The pool itself is excellent but why oh why do we have to have loud pop music belting out all day. We went there because we wanted a rest, not to have out eardrums pierced.

Everywhere was kept clean and the beach and sea were good.

Room Tip: Book a room in the Pine Court and avoid the bungalows

We stayed in Acapulco in September 2012. Check-in was done very quickly, so we could go to our room and get some sleep. During our stay there were many people from Iran staying in the hotel. I really like the kindness of the Iranian people!

The room and bathroom were of a decent size and were clean. Cleaning was done every day. The only annoying part of it was that the cleaning hours were from 09:00 till 16:00 which was not convenient for us, because our toddler sleeps at noon. I have skipped the cleaning 1 day and only asked for fresh towels because the cleaning lady was just about to clean the room while our toddler was asleep.
The hotel has 3 pools, 1 jacuzzi and 1 pool for children. One of the pools has 5 water slides. Our toddler of almost 2 years old had the time of her life! The beach is very well maintained and clean. We have enjoyed that as well.
The animation team is just great. Our toddler enjoyed the mini-disco ( which was a little bit late in the evening for her 21:00, but it's vacation time right?) and we have enjoyed the animation hours as well.
The food in the hotel is great. There was enough variation and there was really enough choise. It can be crowded in the restaurant when you choose to eat around 20:00.
The only point that needs to improve is the restaurant staff. There are kind waiters walking around, but most of them are grumpy and sometimes they just ignore your request.

A special thanks goes to Ms. Munevver who is working at the telephone central of the hotel. She is smiling all day and helps you when she can.

We had a nice and comfortable stay in North-Cyprus thanks to this hotel.

On arrival at the Acapulco we were hot , tired and hungry. Check in was slow, they didn't seem to know what rooms we were in . We asked about dinner only to be told the restaurant had closed but we could have some food in the lounge bar. We had to leave our luggage in reception (no porter service was offered/mentioned) whilst we went in search of food. In the lounge bar we were told that only toast or a sandwich was available but if we wanted a hot meal we could pay extra for it . As we had booked half board and that evenings meal was supposedly included we were not impressed but they were adamant. Eventually we negotiated a club sandwich which finally arrived half an hour later. We followed this with some fruit which were charged extra for !. We gave up on food after that and went to retrieve our luggage(still sitting in reception) and find our rooms. Once located on the 2nd floor in the main hotel, they were 'adequate' Clean and spacious with mini bar but jaded .....stained carpets, bath & sink plugs missing (and toilet paper some days !) and in need of redecoration and updating. Also, there are no tea and coffee making facilities and strict instructions in the hotel brochure that ONLY food & drink purchased from the hotel can be consumed in rooms. Everything seems to be charged as an extra at the 'Acapulco' even fresh orange juice at breakfast was an extra 6TL per person ! Touching briefly on the restaurant....if you like the school canteen effect, queuing, pushing and shoving then this is the hotel for you ! All meals are buffet style in a separate building and credit where its due the quality and quantity cannot be faulted. The main problem is by the time you have queued, made your choices and got back to your table in the capacious seating area (no trays provided so its a balancing act with plates) most of the food is cold. Its also a pain having to make 2 or 3 trips to get drinks along with food at breakfast. The waiting staff & chefs worked like trojans and had it not been for them having a happy positive fun attitude we would have abandoned the restaurant and gone elsewhere. In summary, the Acapulco is 'a poor average' and definitely nowhere near the 5*'s it claims. It's a great resort with a host of facilities but they seem to be more intent on expansion and getting more money in than they do their guests comfort. If you want a bit of pampering and a relaxing holiday where everything is run smoothly and every need catered for ...avoid this hotel ! It's in a great area from which to explore Northern Cyprus but I would definitely recommend car hire...we hired a jeep and it was great fun !
