Owner description: The royal burial church of Denmark and a UNESCO world heritage site. Experience a magnificent church and an architectural masterpiece. 1000 Years of Danish history are gathered here under beautifully decorated vaults and in dark crypts. Here 39 kings and queens of Dnemark lie buried. Roskilde Cathedral is just 20 minutes away by train from Copenhagen central station.

This is where the Danish kings and queens are buried. Rigt now they are designing a grave for our Queen and her husband, to have it ready when necessary

This church houses the remains and caskets of the monarchy. It is interesting to see all the different designs of the various rulers. It was covered on the Copenhagen card too. That is actually why we went in. We were right there since we had come to see the Viking Ship museum so we thought we would take a peek. But if grand tombs are not your thing, skip it.

This cathedral is gigantic and beautiful. It is very impressive to find all the royal shrines in it.

There is no wonder why this is a UNESCO world heritage site. You feel more cultured just for visiting the place. It's always a bit strange visiting people's crypts, especially when they were the ruller of the nation. A take out for me was to see the fashions, wealth and importance of the monarchy at the times in which they were buried reflected in how ornate their crypts were.

Roskilde Cathedral houses the memorial chapels and graves of the kings and queens of Denmark. The stone carving, metal work, and painting in the memorial chapels are amazing. We also enjoyed the wonderful bronze front door of the cathedral and the golden altar. Definitely one of the great sights of Denmark, capturing Danish history since Harold Bluetooth made Roskilde his capital. It's a short drive from Copenhagen and well worth the excursion, particularly when combined with a visit to the Viking Museum.
