I've read a lot about the viking era so it was great to see real examples even though they are not complete, but what do you expect after so long under water? Good movie in English explaining when and how the ships were recovered and conserved.
The reconstructed vessels in the harbour were excellent. Craftsmen woodcarving, making baskets, rope etc and shipbuilding on site. The highlight was sailing in one of the ships.
The museum is nearly 2km from the station and served by an hourly bus service on both saturday and sunday, weekdays more frequently.
Highlight of our time in Denmark.

I visited this museum during summer 2012 for a family vacation with DK relatives. It is a great learning experience for the whole family showing the relics of Viking longboats discovered in Roskilde fjord as well as the history of the area. The museum is just outside Roskilde so you are a few minutes walk in the summer from some very nice cafes. While we were visiting the local rowing team was practicing in the longboats which the children really enjoyed.

If you are into Vikings then this is the place to visit. Well made exhibition with ships inside and some re-build boats outside that you can try.

We really enjoyed the museum, especially the children's activities, dressing as Vikings and making a coin. We also went out on a Viking boat, rowing and sailing on the fyord.
