Owner description: This historic castle was constructed on three islands and is surrounded by lake and beautiful gardens. Frederiksborg Castle has housed The Museum of National History since 1878. A tour through the museum's many beautiful rooms is an encounter with kings, queens, nobles, the bourgeois, events, and epochs, which have all shaped the country's history and development from the Middle Ages to the 21st century. The museum was founded by brewer J.C. Jacobsen, the founder of Carlsberg.

“Amazing Castle and Beautiful Grounds”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed October 22, 2013

We took the S-Train from Copenhagen to Hillerod. The journey took about 45 minutes and was very scenic. We spent about 3.5 hours at the castle. There is so much to see inside and out. The Castle Chapel is quite magnificent. The organ pipes are stunning and the Coats of Arms & stained glass is fascinating to look at. The Museum of National History is housed inside the castle. The artwork and stunning ceilings in each of the rooms are quite exquisite. So much history to see and experience. It gives you an idea of what it must have been like to live in or visit this castle in all of its glory. The castle gardens are not to be missed. It is a very relaxing stroll through the immaculately landscaped and tiered baroque garden with its elegant fountains. There are many views of Frederiksborg Castle from the many different levels of the gardens. This is a very worthwhile castle to visit.

“Squeezed tour - need more time”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed October 21, 2013

We booked this tour on viator. The journey to the castles was very scenic and the castles in themselves should be visited. However, we felt that the tour was conducted in a rush and an additional hour could have been better. In fact, the guide was not willing to take us to the statue of viking hero at Hamlet castle. Only on insistence of a fellow traveler, the guide took us to visit the statue. The explanations by the guide were fine. But as I said, to do the justice, an hour or two should be added.

“Enthusiastic and knowledgable guide”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed October 12, 2013

First we went for a short walk in the impressive castle gardens. Do not miss this, even if the weather is suboptimal.. Then we went on a guided tour about selected kings and their wifes and/or mistresses led by Cecilie Damsgaard. Cecilie deserves a rating of 6 out of 5 (yes, I am aware that the maths do not support my statement) for her enthusiasm, energy and vast knowledge about 6 Danish kings and their wifes, mistresses and other companions. She knew so much that we needed a bit more than the scheduled hour to learn everything and all guests stayed until the end. Simply brilliant!

“Enchanting Fairy Tale Castle in a Slice of Life Danish Town”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed October 9, 2013

The castle and its impressive grounds really shows off the Danish lifestyle of 2013. We were there on a sunny autumn afternoon. Adults and children were riding around on bikes. The town has a pedestrian shopping area (Hatorget). You can see the people getting off their commuter trains and hustling home and those in town enjoying every bit of outdoor time that they can get. The castle is a "pile" inside that looks like lots of stuff that perhaps the Royal Family needs to store somewhere ("granny's attic", dear I say). But it is still a palace and an entire wing of it is being reconstructed. The grounds are traditional yet creative, with a real touch of whimsy. The cascade of water, right down to the river is a delight to the eyes. It is a very romantic place. A great place to propose to someone, I would say. The grounds stay open late and are utilized by joggers, post-prandial strollers. This is a castle that is a little dusty on the inside but vibrant and alive on the outside. I especially liked the fountain out front. The sounds of the fountain, combined with the musical chimes on the hour, present an amazing opportunity to create a short video on your iphone or other device. Mine is not very good but the sound brings me right back to Frederiksborg Slot and Hilleroe.

“Beautiful but a bit dull”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed October 3, 2013

The castle itself is very grand looking, and the rooms are all very impressively decorated. The church chapel is amazing, as is the reconstructed great hall. But, I found the whole museum experience a bit dull and dry. It is a museum filled with paintings and furniture throughout history, and while these are all spectacular, there is something lacking.
Firstly the audio tour was a little bit vague. I missed the exciting background stories you get with castles, instead only hearing about the great wealth of the royals and the museum's founder. If you want to have a great audio tour go to Palace Het Loo in the Netherlands. There you will hear very interesting stories about the palace and its inhabitants. And that is what I found to be missing with this castle.
Also, there is only a little written information in the form of plastic hand outs in some of the rooms. Otherwise your best bet is to take an audio tour.

Another note: keep an eye on the battery level of your Ipod if taking an audio tour. Mine died half way through! Also, the volume on the audio tour is very quiet even when set at maximum, so people with hearing difficulties may want to consider this before taking the tour.
