Owner description: This historic castle was constructed on three islands and is surrounded by lake and beautiful gardens. Frederiksborg Castle has housed The Museum of National History since 1878. A tour through the museum's many beautiful rooms is an encounter with kings, queens, nobles, the bourgeois, events, and epochs, which have all shaped the country's history and development from the Middle Ages to the 21st century. The museum was founded by brewer J.C. Jacobsen, the founder of Carlsberg.

The most impressive is rich decoration and huge collection of portraits of Danish kings. Before you visit the castle it is useful to read about Danish history and remember at least some kings and queens. Come early, before the castle is filled with tourists. There is a small exhibition for kids in the basement.
Even if you have a map of the castle, the route is quite complicated with many passes and stairs; you will probably visit some rooms twice on the route. You will spend at least 2.5 hours inside, plus 1 hour outside, in the park.

We visited friends who live in Hillerod. They took us to visit this stunning castle and grounds, and we were very impressed. It was winter when we went and we all went sledging, what fun! The lake surrounding the castle was frozen and it looked amazing. Well worth a visit.

Thoroughly enjoyed this as a day trip out of Copenhagen city, the train from which takes around 45 mins. The town of Hillerod was like a ghost town on a Saturday morning, which was strange! The location of the castle is so picturesque. The audio history tour was truly fascinating and I really enjoyed seeing such beautifully kept artefacts from so many years ago. The gardens are incredible and we would have spent a lot longer walking them if it hadn't been so cold! Well worth a visit for a bit of Danish culture.

Great castle in far from Copenhagen. Easy to reach via commuter train. Take the tour of the castle and get the history. Most impressive is the church that is part of the castle.

I lived in this town for two years and still love going back to visit friends. Every visit I take a walk around the Castle and Lake. It is a really beautiful Castle in a wonderful location. In winter the lake has been known to freeze over and skaters and sledders abound.
