Owner description: This historic castle was constructed on three islands and is surrounded by lake and beautiful gardens. Frederiksborg Castle has housed The Museum of National History since 1878. A tour through the museum's many beautiful rooms is an encounter with kings, queens, nobles, the bourgeois, events, and epochs, which have all shaped the country's history and development from the Middle Ages to the 21st century. The museum was founded by brewer J.C. Jacobsen, the founder of Carlsberg.

The castle is unique, the collection is excellent, the place and the atmosphere is exquisite, the history is captivating and J.C. Jacobsen helped restore it! This is Danish history at its best.

The Slot is a big wedding cake, with icing on top. The site is well take care off and the gardens are a nice place to visit when you're with kids.

“An extraordinary castle”
Reviewed October 27, 2012

When you visit the Copenhagen region, this is a must! The buildings dating back to early 17th century are fabulous, the interior even more so. Follow the signs for visiting and you are taken through the luxury of the royalty and noble Denmark over centuries. The heraldry of many famous people are shown when you climb the stairs up to the church and inside the church itself. Following on, the marble hall is breathtaking. It is impossible to describe it all. Overwhelming! The temporary exhibition at the time of the visit was a fine collection of Chinese cultural heritage.

“Must see”
Reviewed October 4, 2012

As for me it was most interesting during my short trip in Copenhagen and county. Nice exterior and garden zone with lake. I made a lot of good pictures. Interior isn't rich, esp.in comparison with french and russians palaces. Only one thing I was disappointed-bridge reconstruction at inner yard.

“Versailles in Denmark”
Reviewed October 2, 2012

Actually, you could hide Frederiksborg Castle and its magnificent gardens in Versailles, but that just means that you get to visit most of the nooks and crannies in this terrific and well kept attraction. This was my 2nd visit, the first being last summer when the little ferry boat took us from downtown Hillerod to the castle grounds. This time we walked to the end of the shopping street (I think every town in Denmark has one of these) and approached the castle by land. Entrance to the Slot was free courtesy of the Copenhagen Card; the magnificent gardens are free anytime. Frederiksborg is a wonderful period piece, full of 17th to 19th century furniture and trappings, and on a sunny day you can easily spend 2 or 3 hours there. And it is only a 25 or so minute train ride direct to Helsingor, to visit Kronberg or Hamlet's Castle; trains leave every 1/2 hour from Hillerod - make sure you take the Fredensborg train, otherwise the trip via Gilleleje takes over an hour.
