"Gitte Kik", is the actual name of the owner/chef of restaurant Slotskaelderen Hos, but a lot of people refer to it as Gitte Kik. The restaurant offers a great selection of traditional lunchtime smorrebrod: open-faced sandwiches on thin rye bread, topped with roast beef, pork, shrimp, salmon, potatoes and different sauces/toppings.Try the marinated salmon with dill, the tiny shrimps salad, or the frikadeller (hot Danish meatballs).Reservations are suggested (it's only open for lunch) and it is a popular place. We managed to get a table at 12:30 without a reservation if we agreed to be done by 2:00 (no problem for tourists on the go, but Danes do enjoy their meals and linger over them quite a bit). Staff very friendly and chatty if we had a question, even though they were busy. Most patrons order beer with their lunch, or aquavit (like schnapps). It's very convenient if you are doing the canal boat tour that begins and ends at Gammel Strand; from the dock it's just a quick walk up Fortunstraede to #4-the restaurant will be on the left. The windows are down at sidewalk level though, and it's not a large place, so we managed to walk right by it. Like most things in Copenhagen, it's not inexpensive: 4 smorrebrod and 3 beers were about $75 US, but completely worth it to try the quintessential Danish lunch in an authentic place that wasn't overrun with tourists.
