"Gitte Kik", is the actual name of the owner/chef of restaurant Slotskaelderen Hos, but a lot of people refer to it as Gitte Kik. The restaurant offers a great selection of traditional lunchtime smorrebrod: open-faced sandwiches on thin rye bread, topped with roast beef, pork, shrimp, salmon, potatoes and different sauces/toppings.Try the marinated salmon with dill, the tiny shrimps salad, or the frikadeller (hot Danish meatballs).Reservations are suggested (it's only open for lunch) and it is a popular place. We managed to get a table at 12:30 without a reservation if we agreed to be done by 2:00 (no problem for tourists on the go, but Danes do enjoy their meals and linger over them quite a bit). Staff very friendly and chatty if we had a question, even though they were busy. Most patrons order beer with their lunch, or aquavit (like schnapps). It's very convenient if you are doing the canal boat tour that begins and ends at Gammel Strand; from the dock it's just a quick walk up Fortunstraede to #4-the restaurant will be on the left. The windows are down at sidewalk level though, and it's not a large place, so we managed to walk right by it. Like most things in Copenhagen, it's not inexpensive: 4 smorrebrod and 3 beers were about $75 US, but completely worth it to try the quintessential Danish lunch in an authentic place that wasn't overrun with tourists.

I went here with my family, and we had a great time. They do the classic "smorrebrod" and there are so many different varieties to choose from! They even made some special vegetarian ones for us. A little bit pricey though.

every time I visit Copenhagen I try to go there. One of the best open sandwich restaurants in DK. And the way they keep the story of the restaurants as a big part of the decoration I think is beautiful. Two negative things though, very hard to get a table there and when you are "in" you sence that the waiters are a bit uptight since they are so used to serve danish celebs and since you are not one they really let you feel it. They could treat you a bit nicer. Every guests krona has the same value, doesn't it? But because of the food and the enviroment I recommend you try it out.

We battled to get a reservation at Gitte Kik despite calling over a week in advance, so I'd suggest bookings are important. And worth making.
This tightly squeezed space has been serving patrons for over a hundred years and doing a great job. Kept in the family, the traditional food and menu is very good.
Almost all service is open sandwiches, which you select from a display, and then enjoy with a local eau de vie and complimentary local beer... a really special treat and not outlandishly priced.
It's tucked away in a semi-basement so easy to pass the door and miss it, check a map to be sure you find it first time.
