“Classic Danish Furniture Design - not in a museum but in THE hotel!”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed November 16, 2011

Hotel Alexandra in Copenhagen is an absolute gem of a place and a must for anyone who loves Danish furniture design. The Hotel is full of it! We stayed in the Nana Ditzel room and were so comfortable and well looked after. I can thoroughly recommend it - it is like staying overnight in the best museum but so welcoming and wonderful staff - very helpful. Beautifully clean and so so stylish. Can't wait to return. An added plus is that connected to the hotel now next door is a second branch of Lele Street KItchen (Vietnamese/Saigon street food and bar). That room is mine OK so you can't have it!!!!!!

Room Tip: Don't you dare book my room!

This hotel is fairly well located, quite close to the main train station and town hall and also a short walk from the main shopping district. We had two different rooms during our stay here, the first room was facing the main road and it was quite noisy. The second room was facing a side street and was much better in terms of noise, however the walls of this hotel are paper thin, I could hear what was going on in the room next door no matter how hard I tried to block my ears. Was a little disappointed with the 'danish design', things were looking a bit shabby and could do with a bit of a renovation. Bathrooms were a little scary, the toilet bowl was a little bit brown and smelt a bit funny, this could have been cleaned much better. The shower was so tiny, the shower curtain would keep sticking to me whenever I had a shower and I am not a big person. In the first room that we had the shower leaked and water pressure was next to nothing. Hairdryers are provided but are very ineffective, they are the ones that are attached to the wall. I also found that when I used the hair dryer it would get hot and start burning my hand after 5 minutes. The breakfast provided was fine, buffet style and service was fine too, nothing I can complain about here. It rained heavily on one of the days we were there and we were able to use their large hotel umbrellas free of charge. Given the price, and I realise things are more expensive in Denmark, this hotel was a bit disappointing. While it may have provided the amenities required for a 3 star rating, the standard of the amenities provided was more like 2 star. I doubt I would stay here again.

Spent 2 very comfortable nights at the Alexandra - the decor is tasteful and charming, especially the lobby. It's an easy walk from the train station and to many sites - the Stroget, Tivoli, Nyhavn and other neighborhoods you will enjoy wandering around. We ate one breakfast in the hotel restaurant and it was not inexpensive, but abundant and very good. The hotel staff wasn't overly friendly, but made a few good recommendations for places to eat within walking distance.

Room Tip: Hotel is on busy corner, but noise wasn't an issue for me, even with windows open

The Alexandra is centrally located & close to the metro, Tivoli, Stroget and other attractions. This very comfortable hotel provided a great breakfast although the attached newly opened restaurant was average.
Although the hotel is on the H.C. Andersens Boulevard the double windows ensured a quiet environment overnight.

I enjoyed my stay here, the decoration and furniture is a breath of fresh air from the sterile sameness of some modern hotels. It sets itself out to showcase Danish design and does really nicely an a stylish and classy way. The location is pretty good as well, five minutes walk from the station and pretty much in the middle of town. I didn't bother with taxi from the train station, just walked straight there avoiding the hundreds of bikes, you can hire your own from the hotel if you want to feel like a local.

The downsides though just took a bit of gloss off, the rooms are fairly small even by city standards and the bathroom is really a large ensuite. We were on the second floor at the front of the hotel and the soundproofing was pretty good. A slight bit of traffic noise that might disturb a light sleeper but nothing to worry about really. Other little things though were annoying, there's no iron and ironing board in the room instead you have to go to a service cupboard down the corridor, and when you do the iron is a small travel iron. If your going to supply just one iron per floor then make it a good one. The welcome instructions were a bit light as well, I had to guess that 9 was to call the reception desk, why not just put a note on the introduction, the TV instructions were a bit vague as well, but we got there in the end!

All in all though it's a pretty decent hotel for the price, just a couple of little niggles.

We stayed for 3 nights in the Finn Juhls room which is a lovely & spacious corner room on the 3rd floor.
Even though the view was of busy HC Anderson boulevard, the room was quiet and peaceful.
The hotel is very well located for all the central sights, main central shopping district and the Tivoli and main train station.
The bedding was warm and comfortable but we found the actual mattress a little soft for our backs. The cupboard was in the room entry area as was the ironing board and iron.
The bathroom was of a reasonable size with twin sinks. The products and towels were fine.
There was plenty of hot water in the shower (only, no bath). The only problem we had with the bathroom was the shower curtain which was a bit of a nuisance.
We appreciated the kettle provided in the room, along with some tea and coffee.
We tried the hotel breakfast on one morning which was fine. There was a decent range of
food but the temporary breakfast room (main restaurant is being renovated) is a bit small
which made breakfast a bit crowded and noisy.
Staff were acommodating, even offering a free red wine late one night when we were in the
lobby making use of the free wifi.
The free wifi was only available in the reception area (a very nicely furnished area on the
ground floor). There was no wifi signal in the rooms or in the breakfast area.
Overall, we had a very pleasant stay and would stay here again.

Room Tip: Go for one of the slightly larger design rooms on the corner.

The Hotel Alexandra is in an ideal location for exploring Copenhagen. It's located near the train station, Tivoli and Strøget. From the hotel, we were able to walk to Nyhavn, Christiania and Rosenborg Castle. We stayed in a third-floor room facing the side street and it was fairly quiet. The beds were very comfortable and the room was reasonably clean. We booked rooms in several cities throughout Scandinavia (which is generally more expensive than other parts of Europe and the US) and this one was one of the least expensive, so I consider it a good value. We did not have the hotel breakfast because we had heard it was overpriced. Instead, we found a nearby coffee shop. Staff at the front desk was helpful. We would stay at the Hotel Alexandra again.

Room Tip: Side or back rooms are quieter.
