One of the best smørrebrød-restaurants in Copenhagen! Enjoy the food with a beer and traditional "lille" (=schnaps). Good and friendly service. Not high prices, even though close to Strøget.

There are so many places to eat authentic Danish Lunch in Copenhagen that you almost need to be there for several months and eat seven days a week. Cafe Gammel Torv (it's 3 words, not the way Tripadvisor lists it! and as other people write it!). This is another restaurant in the basement, with authentic decor from years past. Here they also serve their food on Royal Copenhagen porcelain, unfortunately gone out of production years ago as well. I had the traditional Three Kinds of Herring. It was all excellent, with the exception I like my curry herring stronger in taste, but non the less everything was excellent. The service was excellent. Most people that go there are Danish (As I am) and they know when they have a good place to sit, eat, drink and just be happy. While I was the on a Friday early afternoon, several English speaking couples walked in. Must have been reviews or the bright Danish flags outside. The two waitresses had no problem in conversing with them in English. Don't miss Cafe Gammel Torv, they are located as you guessed on Gammel Torv, but they are easy to miss!

To my mind, smørrebrød - open sandwiches - are the main Danish culinary contribution to the world (maybe apart from Noma :-), but the quality varies so much! If you want to try them out in a wonderfully personal and friendly atmosphere combined with a very high standard I strongly recommend Cafe Gammeltorv (used to be known as Huset med det grønne træ, The house with the green tree). The raw materials used are top quality and they are treated with much love and attention. I had a very tasty warm cooked herring, a delicious curried herring, a very traditional piece of roasted pork and the scoop: a brawn made from oxtails with a gelly of cranberries and a thin slice of raw pickled beetroot. The bread is also excellent and I loved the smoked dripping as well as the fact that they serve organic butter. The service is not only highly professional but also a whole lot more personal than in many other restaurants. You really feel they are there for you. I'll be back!

In Copenhagen and Denmark in general you have to try the local smørrebrød, which you can get in various restaurants both modern and traditional.
Should you go for the more traditional kind I can highly recommend Cafe Gammeltorv - Huset med det grønne træ.
The menu card is not the largest compared to some of the competitors, however the quality you get is some of the best in Copenhagen only a few places makes it as good. The food is ecological and tastes absolutely fantastic. They have a good variation of selected draught or bottled beer and the Snaps/akvavit menu is also very good.
This time I had the Christmas herring and the Christmas sausage, both very tasteful and combined with a christmas snaps and beer from Nørrebro Bryghus, a local micro brewery it truly made my day!
Even the service is very traditional, the tone is typical Danish and you leave the place with a smile on your face every time. I will definitely go back again!

My Mum and I visited this cafe twice because the food was delicious and authentic and the service excellent. No other restaurant or cafe we visited in our three days in Copenhagen could match it. Cafe Gammeltorv serves traditional Danish dishes such as smørrebrød (open sandwiches) with modern flair. The homemade Danish meatballs were the best we have ever tasted. The open sandwiches included toppings like herring prepared various ways, eggs and shrimp and steak tartar. Drinks include a selection of wine, beer and schnapps and coffee is served with a couple of gourmet chocolates. This small cafe had only one waitress on the floor but the service was friendly, attentive and gracious. Open for lunch and some evenings for dinner. The cafe's website features the menu in English and is [--]
