Owner description: This hippy enclave is an alternative community unto itself, with local handicrafts and a disproportionate number of vegetarians, artists and young people. Go for a walk around the lake or check out one of the watering holes. Best to visit during the day.

Although I grew up here in Copenhagen, now living in Vancouver, BC, I'm visiting this place for the very first time with my husband and my 2 teenager boys. We felt very safe walking around here, where they don't care what you do, but just DON'T take pictures in the Green Light district, as this is the place where they sell pots.

While growing up here, I don't think it was allowed for outsiders to go into this place and now that I had a chance to visit it, it certainly is a different world.

There seems to circulate a lot of misconceptions and irrational thoughts about visiting the freetown in Copenhagen, but nevertheless it will always stand out as a unique experience, because nowhere else in the western world can we ignore and confront a political taboo, that has survived to the proportions of this small community in the middle of the capital of Denmark.
This is very much a leftover of the counter-culture of the sixties and seventies, and to the pleasure of tens of thousands of smokers, a multi-social and multi-ethnical gathering takes place, which welcome bystanders, to witness an atmosphere that is unknown of elsewhere.
In addition there are several local handcrafts and markets, lots of green areas and channels, with small cozy gardens and outstanding architecture to be explored, that contributes to the final touch of this attraction.

Copenhagen's hippie community- everything is shared and built by hand.
Loved this place. Go there with an open mind and don't be judgemental.

Sort of like an alternate universe. Pusher street, the street where they sell marijuana, was a bit strange with all the signs forbidding photography. And if you take a photo, hippies get in your face and want to see your camera. Most of these idiots are there just to sell pot, while the Christianans are no where to be seen. People in general were not very nice here and they only take DKK. They also accept Euro, but notes only, no coins.

This is like a small part of town with no rules where people go to smoke pot. It is OK... I have never seen anything like it. It is different to see weed growing in the middle of the street. You can not take pictures here. And trust me... I wouldn't. You may get attacked. I brought my 3 and 6 year old kids in here, and I felt safe. You can buy pot from vendors if you like. it is kindof trashy and seems like a lot of homeless people.
