Fee: No
Recommended length of visit: More than 3 hours
Owner description: This hippy enclave is an alternative community unto itself, with local handicrafts and a disproportionate number of vegetarians, artists and young people. Go for a walk around the lake or check out one of the watering holes. Best to visit during the day.

“Not for everone”
Reviewed October 2, 2012

It's really a must-see during your trip in Copenhagen. At first side it's a scary area, but once you get in it's really nice. There is one street where they sell drugs, but there are alot of nice places to sit and enjoy the views. There are a lot of tourist so there is a good vibe. There are also kids and locals. It's a little bit strange and quite expensive to eat but it's really worth the visit. It's for sure not a spot for everyone.

“Great if you want to smoke some weed”
Reviewed September 27, 2012

In the '70s, a bunch of hippies turned this former military base into a "free town". And then promptly banned anyone else moving in. Hypocritical much? Then came the drugs. If you take the number 66 bus from central station, it will get you off pretty much at the main entrance, right near Pusher Street. You don't need me to explain to you what goes on down Pusher street, do you?

So if you want to buy some weed off some dude in a camouflaged tent with his face all covered up and smoke it with a bunch of aging stoners who scream "NO PHOTO! NO PHOTO! NO PHOTOOOOO!!!1one" far-too-aggressively any time one of the many, many tourists gets out a camera, Christiania is great.

The locals do not like you, and you kind of get that vibe. They do not want you to be there. They just want you to buy their drugs and drug paraphernalia, and then get out.

“Not for everyone, but I thought it was awesome.”
Reviewed September 27, 2012

I read about Christiania in the guide books and elsewhere, I'll admit I did not know what to expect. Before you even enter you immediately get a funky vibe. Inside there is lots of activity, people walking around, art everywhere, it's awesome. There are large signs inside telling you that you are "Entering the Green Zone" and that there are no pictures allowed, no running, (it insights panic they say). There are several small makeshift kiosks with dealers selling various joints and hash. It's very out in the open and according to the guidebooks "still illegal". After the "Green Zone" there is an area with picnic tables, (ash trays on all of them) a bar, people playing music, a pool table. I got a beer as I'm not a 'smoker' but everyone was having a good time and enjoying beer, smokes etc. I walked around further and took in lots more art and funky buildings. There was a playground with kids swinging, while parents smoked. Residents sweeping up. Several open fires in steel drum barrels. More than one person with dreads. Bob Marley, music event posters, t-shirts flags. I never once felt unsafe while walking around, I enjoyed it! I could see that if you were uncomfortable with any of the above things, you would probably feel "out of your element".

I love Amsterdam and by chance had heard about Christiania. I was going to Copenhagen anyway so naturally had to explore this Christiania, the free town. I was not really sure what to expect but will say that i liked it there. There are coffe shops, a bar or two, a bakery that opens late, market stalls and etc. inc. all kinds of smokers memorabillia also the good green stuff which is just GREAT.
