It is situated in the heart of the city on Vor Frue Plads next to the main building of the University of Copenhagen. The church was designed by architect Christian Frederik Hansen in the neoclassical style and was completed in 1829.The church can seat more than 1100 people and is decorated with the twelve apostles, the Risen Christ and the baptismal fount in the form of an angel holding a large scallop shell, all in Italian carrara marble. These sculptures were completed in Rome by the famous Danish sculptor Bertel Thorvaldsen. In the aisles many portraits of bishops and deans are on display.Night Church thursdays, fridays and sundays evenings offers prayer, electronica, poetry, jazz, taizé, gospel workshop and other contemporary forms all in candle-lighting. The main Cathederal in Copenhagen with an interesting history to current time, Princess Mary married Prince Fredrick here. The Christ statue is one of the most beautiful I have seen, and just embraces you as you enter the church. The simplicity of the interior of the Cathederal permits the figure to dominate, creating a wonderful ambiance. We purchased a brief guide book ' Next Stop Copenhagen - Copenhagen in a few hours' which provided a suggested tour of the city with a commentary on each of the recommended sites of interest (though we took much longer than a 'few hours'!). This assisted us appreciate the Cathederal's historic importance as well as it's beauty.

Compared to a church I visited yesterday, this one impresses by a lack of ornamentation. Apart from the tower, it's just under two hundred years old and was the site for Hans Christian Andersen's funeral, attended by the monarch.

The simplicity of this church is the main attraction, along with the beautiful, peaceful Christ statue and the wonderful marble statues around the sides.

The church is build by the architect C.F.Hansen, the most famous architect from classicistic period. Inspired by Palladio in italy.
