After visiting the ' Mermaid ' we walked through the fort. Its a splendid example of the type of fortification seen throughout Europe in the 17th century an attempt to counter development of artillery. Despite its origins it has now become a peaceful walk back in time, across the moat and through the ancient gate to a self contained community of houses, a windmill and preserved cannons, exiting through the far gate back into the town. Its free and worth a look.
