“A surprise in every room”
Reviewed March 5, 2014 via mobile

My visit to this museum was a happy accident. I wandered in on a chilly winter afternoon. A room full of Rembrandts?! Matisse, Picasso, Braque, Modigliani. I especially enjoyed the Danish artists because I know so little about them. It was a discovery. Combine your visit with some time at Rosenborg Castle which is right across the street.

“Art from the 1600's to last year”
Reviewed February 22, 2014

A large collection of art, covering European artists from over 400 years. A large section is given to contemporary artists, and you can follow the development of artistic expression by walking the collections in time order. No big hits, but interesting pieces.
There is a map for each part of the museum, suggesting different walking routes. They also sell other guides, and provide you, if you happen to like it that way, with an iPad to guide you.
The cafeteria is OK. There is also an area for kids, and a room where you can test your own artistic abilities by drawing yourself.
The permanent collections are always free, for some of the special exhibitions there is a fee. Currently they are renovating the courtyard in front of the Gallery, so maybe in the summer there is a new garden in place!

“Great way of spending an hour in Copenhagen”
Reviewed February 20, 2014

I am not a committed museum or art buff. As a result, I often will not pay to enter one of these establishments, unless I am really interested - and being from the UK, we have become used to having free access to great museums. So, it was great to find that the National museum was fre, providing a very cool environment with lots of stimulating art to see (even if i don't understand or appreciate half of it!). Recommend as a place to visit in Copenhagen - and if you are travelling with your wife/girlfriend - it will make you appear more cultured than you actually are - so go for it gentlemen!
