“A treat for art wonks”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed October 4, 2012

Not one of the 'big' museums in Europe for sure, but an interesting, cosy and quite modern place with an intriguing modern art collection (be sure to check out the surrealists) and, if you're into it, a huge collection of classical Nordic paintings.

“Krazy for Kunst”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed October 2, 2012

I was in Copenhagen last week on business, running one of our 'Disaster Management for Business" courses, and decided to catch the Matisse Exhibit at the National Gallery of Denmark or Statens Museum for Kunst. It stays open late on Wednesdays. The show was excellent, and the rest of the Gallery was superb. They have a great collection of European painters from the 1300's up to the modern era, organized chronologically. Plus a very nice cafeteria overlooking a small pond. It was very easy to get to - Bus 26 from anywhere downtown - and both the bus and museum entrance were free, courtesy of the Copenhagen Card. Next time I am in CPH, I am definitely going back.

This museum has a very good collection of old and new Danish artworks, and is quite easy to get to from the city centre. It has a nice cafe too.

“Excellent Danish collection”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed September 24, 2012

Go on a Sunday, when this museum is free. It is not crowded.

This museum, housed in a classic building with a lovely modern addition, is strictly art and sculpture.

It has a nice European collection, beginning with early medieval religious paintings, and works its way through classic landscapes and portraits, including a few "name" artists, to a really silly and strained modern art collection. We were not the only visitors rolling our eyes and racing through this section. most of the pieces came off as if the artists were just trying too hard, and had passed the threshold of interesting into desperation. Don't even waste your time on this section.

The museum also has a comprehensive collection of Danish art, some excellent, some placed there simply because they were Danish. I particularly a gallery devoted to Christoffer Eckersberg, with more space following for works by his students. I had not heard of him before, but his paintings were really exquisite, both portraits and landscapes, and his students' less formal style was enjoyable as well.

I would say to start with the Danish collection, because you will see artists you are totally unfamiliar with, while the European collection is "more of the same" that you can see in any European museum.

The French gallery was very small and kind of meh.

Cafeteria downstairs was very pretty, colorful, and airy, if a bit pricey, and had a nice view. We paid about $20USD for a couple of hot chocolates and a tea.
