Enjoy a cup of coffe - see an exhibition, listen to live music or a lecture - or just take peak in the many books.

Spent an afternoon here while my son caught up on some work in one of the library work areas. The building itself is just amazing. It blends the old and new in a most spectacular way. Views are spectacular from almost anywhere in the building.
My first stop was the cafe area, which is all glass with views of the canals, rowers, and pedestrians. There is a nice snack selection and delicious tea and coffee. Wireless access is available, so a great place to relax, people watch, and catch up on email.
There is a curvy escalator that takes you up to the second floor. From there, there are steps or an elevator to climb to the highest part of the library with the best views. The glass wall sections are connected with what looks like metal "jacks" and give you the expansive view of the canal and the neighborhoods beyond. Much of the old brick and arches were retained and gives that old library warmth. There are touches of modern furniture and a ceiling with an abstract mural. I fould it to be a very nice place to spend some time on a very cold Copenhagen afternoon.

We had been advised there were art exhibitions here in the Black Diamond extension to the library. Our hotel gave us free tickets so we went to check it out. The structure itself is very modern and from the canal looks very striking. The reflection into the water and of the water onto the marble facade is stunning. The cafe is very nice, and overlooks the canal where you can spend time people watching.
The exhibitions themselves were a disappointment. One was about fakes and frauds and was set out to look like an old office, with cabinets and desks - this is my daily life, and I didn't particularly want to spend my holiday back in an office.
There was also a photographic exhibition in the other basement room, but there seemed to be an lot of celebrity shots, and as portraits don't really interest me, especially obviously fawning to the rich and glamorous, it left me cold.

Big black building with a surprisingly light and white interior. Placed beautifully on the waterside the modern expansion is an attractive building. There was a nice photo exhibition, for free. Wandering around I stumbled into the old part with a very classical reading room. Perfect hide out to read, rest, look around and surf the web (free hot spot). don't miss it

The Royal Library is in a beautiful location on one of Copenhagen's many canals. The buildings are quite interesting in themselves: combo of old and new. Worth a visit, and a coffee in the shop
