The Islamic collection is breath-taking! This Collection definitely is underestimated! I wish there were also English explanation together with Danish for each items exhibited but if you take the headset at the reception, you can listen to English explnation.

Together with the exhibits, which were of very high quality, there were excellent explanations of the Muslim faith and culture together with how these have changed peoples down the centuries through the influence of Islam. Although the detailed explanations on individual exhibits were only in Danish, the background to them were in Danish and English. All the exhibits were very well presented. The European section seemed smaller and duller in comparison and probably not so enlightening to the European visitor. The Islamic section, though, was very educational and well worth the visit in order to gain a proper understanding of the Islamic world. The founder of the museum decided to preserve his collections for posterity and have the museum open to the public without charge. An excellent gift to the people of Copenhagen and to the visitor!

Complete dullsville unless you have a special interest in Islamic art and ceramics! A couple of hours of my life wasted going here!

Islamic exhibition is of course the highlight. We spent 2 1/2 hours and had to skip by a lot of it. The displays are beautifully done, lighting is top notch. Make no mistake, to see it all you would have to go more than once. Also enjoyed the small Hammershoi exhibit. The building housing the collection is a lovely old character building with gorgeous staircases and detailing. Only disappointment is that we would like to have more English description.

The David Collection is a private, free museum exhibiting both Danish and European art, porcelain and furniture. That is nothing special, yet. The museum´s two top floors exhibiting Islam art and artifacts is. The collection´s lay out and lightning solutions are to a very high standard, even better is information given to visitors both by texts and maps as well as orally, through that little carry-on gadget. We spent there two hours, but will go there for many more hours on our next visit to Copenhagen. It is simply outstanding. To us West European christians the David Collection opens wide new horizons about the history and culture of Islam. Ironically, the name David suggests the founder´s Jewish background, but that should not bother anyone, as Islam is treated in the museum as what it is: one of the world´s most important and influential cultural and religious movements. Respect, definitely! It is hard to compress hundreds of years, thousands of miles into two floors, but the David Collection is a brave and intelligent attempt. Did you know what was the crucial factor dividing Muslims into Shia´s and Sunni´s? I didn´t, now I know. If you are not interested in religions, the David Collection is a first class design museum exhibiting first class design from a period of more than a thousand years. Highly recommended.
