“A nice change from the chains”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed July 15, 2014 via mobile

Our room was comfortable with a welcome sitting area, though the bathroom (shower, no bath) was a little small. The little snacks and apples available free each day are a nice touch. The Axel's location is easily walkable from the central railway station (even with cases in tow) and within walking distance of the main sights, and walking is the best way to see Copenhagen. If you want a change from the identikit chain hotels this is a good choice.

This 129-room hotel is in a fairly attractive old building, well situated - close to the main railway station, Tivoli Gardens, bars, restaurants of all types, and the famous Strøget shopping precinct.

Our room was reasonably sized and well furnished save for woefully inadequate cupboard space: a single wardrobe with 15" of hanging space for two people for a week!

The biggest drawback though was our sub-standard bathroom. The bath itself was an odd-shaped affair made of pseudo rough-hewn stone, which was uncomfortable to sit in, difficult to get into and out of, and the water pressure was so weak that it took over 20 minutes to half-fill. The shower was dark, with a narrow plastic shower-curtain, also with weak water pressure of erratic temperature.

The room has a fridge, but is not air-conditioned. The TV has a restricted bouquet of channels - for example, we didn't get to see any of Wimbledon which was on during the week of our stay.

The hotel offers a generally good buffet breakfast, though its coffee is disappointing and the meal is overpriced at DKK179 pp.

Room Tip: Check out the bathroom before you commit!

I like the hotel the location was great for walking around and going to Tivoli Gardens it was a two block walk from the train station and we were able to easily find our way there from the airport as the first stop. The staff was great and although I have read some reviews with people were complaining that the street was noisy I found that to be an entertaining part of the trip. Our windows open right out onto the street and we could see the different people coming and going at the cafe across the street as well as some of the locals arguing about parking spots. if you are a people watcher I think you will enjoy. For those who wish a quieter less urban stay you should request a room facing the garden.
The staff was very welcoming and always ready to assist. The room while small compared to what I might normally stay in was very comfortable very clean and enjoyable. WIFI was spotty...thats a problem for me and a refrigerator woukd have been nice but all in all I would stay there again

This very Scandinavian, organic, Eco friendly hotel is not for those who seek the comforts of a chain like the Holiday Inn. No AC on a hot day, road noises for those who love their windows open at night and a creaky bed could render lower scores from the faint at heart but the true nature of this lovely, dedicated to sustainability in the future hotel is an experience in discovery. Truly comfortable if ones consciousness can overlook small inconveniences, the friendly staff with attitude t-shirts sporting mottos like "Love Food Hate Waste" or "Recycle is the New Black" make this a delightful experience.

Room Tip: During the warm days, you might want to ask for a room lower to the ground as heat rises our 5th fl...

This hotel is perfectly located if you are coming into the city from the Airport as is two roads away from Copenhagen Central station. 2 minutes walk past the station and you are at Tivoli.
The rooms were clean, and stylishly furnished. We stayed in a double standard on the top floor which was nice. Note it is a Danish thing to have 2 seperate duvets on the bed, which to be honest was actually quite nice. The floors are creaky but our room 520 was at the end of the corridor so we never heard anything. Unfortunately although the bedroom is quite spacious the bathroom is a little small, an the shower can be a little temperamental. However the bathroom was very well equipped with toothbrushes for use and shampoo and conditioner, like big bottles even had a razor.
The hotel is very reasonably priced for Copenhagen and I was pleasantly surprised how nice the hotel actually was. The hotel has a spa you can use, and bikes to rent. The breakfast is an additional charge of 170 kroner per person per breakfast, which works out quite a lot. What we choose to do was pop to lidl around the corner, at the top of the Main Street from the station to the left past Kababish it's 2 mins from the hotel.

Note the restaurant across the street, it always looked busy so we tried it one lunch time, it took 40 mins to get a cold lunch, no cooking involved. My partner enjoyed his traditional herrings however I caught food poisoning from this restaurant so avoid if you can! There are plenty better restaurants at the other end of the road, lots of cafe like bistros which are much nicer.

Tip for Tivoli, the entry into the park is 99 kroner each, but then you pay if you want to go on rides. However you can buy an all ride pass, which is expensive but the price works out to the value of three of te bigger rides so if you do fancy the rides it is probably easier to get the all ride pass.
The weather was lovely whilst we went, however I don't think anyone was prepared for it. So if you go in July take suncream!

It is hot but there is no fan or AC. The drunks outside wont shut up so sleeping with the windows open is not an option. Even with the windows closed we can hear them laughing and yelling. We are in the red light district so there are "gift shops" of sex toys surrounding our hotel- don't bring children here unless you are willing to discuss the merchandise in the windows. The hotel may be clean and charming but i would prefer a good night's sleep.

I really enjoyed my stay here. Having stayed in all manner of hotels during my travels in Denmark, this hotel was a real treat. A boutique style hotel with friendly staff and beautifully appropriated rooms, I enjoy the decor, the beds, and the bathroom and all its amenities. Though not large, there was plenty of room. I enjoyed the trendy use of an iMac computer mounted on the wall that you could use at your own disposal, playing music and watching TV. The Bluetooth keyboard is found on the bed. Nice touch.

I liked the heated floors in the bathroom as well.

In the mornings, I went down and had terrific coffee.

The tiny balcony is nice as my room overlooked the back court.

Close in proximity to almost everything, I enjoyed scouting out the restaurants and wine bars in the area and walking almost everywhere.

The hotel also rents bicycles. If you want to see Copenhagen and experience it the way that locals do, renting a bike is a great way of doing it. Keep in mind they don't ride very quick as we do here in downtown areas in North America (like Toronto and New York). They are casual riders: Almost all of them are doing something else while cycling, be it drinking coffee, texting, or holding an umbrella. There's a reason why most of them have cup holders on their handlebars!!

The rental of the bike is not cheap, but worth it.

The one downside to this small hotel is the narrow stairway and the tiny elevator that services the entire building. It is slow and will not fit more than two people and one piece of luggage.

Room Tip: All rooms are well-furnished and updated.
