“A real gem in CPH”
Reviewed August 24, 2013

My husband and I stayed at the Axel for 7 nights. It was an excellent base for our first exploration of CPH. Located only a few blocks from the train station, it was very easy to get out of town to castles and museums (in addition to all the wonderful sites of central CPH). The staff were very friendly and accommodating, the food was natural, organic and delicious. There is easy access to the great running and walking trail around the lakes. This trail also provides easy access to the adjacent neighborhoods of Norreboro and Osteboro. I highly recommend this hotel and would be happy to return. Thank you Hotel Axel!

If you are an enviromental activist liking living as cramped as in a dollshouse, really crappy internet and sloppy service, then this is the place for you. However, make sure to only bring a small bag, there is no place in the room for suitcases or hanging clothes. Excellent location in Copenhagen but there is many others much better (and cheaper) hotels in the area.

Room Tip: Select another hotel, that is our best tip.

The concept of this hotel is something of ‘chic environmental consciousness with Balinese interiors’. The overarching econess does create a wonderful atmosphere. Service is friendly. You'll find the hotel five minutes walk from center and two streets from the main railway station, so, it’s a good location for a short city break.

Our room was on the small side, but following the same Balinese style and including a daybed, balcony and a bath tub. No throw-away shampoo bottles here – it’s fill in eco cosmetics, eco towels and even eco toilet paper – all in a good way. The only remark would be that our room got extremely hot even though the radiator was off. It was August, so we slept with the balcony doors open, which guarantees being waken up by maintenance traffic in the early hours.

The breakfast buffet of Axel is, of course, organic and plentiful – just as you might expect in Copenhagen, the mecca of brunch. Weather allowing it’s even more delicious to enjoy it on the peaceful courtyard terrace. They do their best to lengthen the season with heaters and throws.

We missed the spa and rental bikes of the hotel this time, but reckon they should make the trip even more enjoyable.

Travel tip: take the train from the airport to the Central Station, which is located just 5 minutes from the hotel. The ride only takes 12 minutes and there is regular service. It you accidentally take the tube you'll need to hop off after 15 minutes at Kongens Nytorvn and you'll face a half an hour walk.

Stayed 3 nites in June in a large room in the back. Quiet and well located to major sites in the city. We walked everywhere. The best part of the hotel in our view is the buffet breakfast in the lobby area. Very appealing, great variety and high quality. On the expensive side, but worth it. The rooms (we saw 3 total as we were traveling with friends) are getting worn and in need of a rehab. The tub/shower arrangement is less than ideal. Cramped and a little dangerous. There is no mount for the hand held shower and try as we might the floor gets flooded.

Maybe my expectations were just too high, but I was definitely disappointed when I got to my room at this hotel.

The property is beautiful, and even the room was well appointed even though being really small, but the hotel is so "green" that it had poor lighting and no air conditioning. In addition, shower was one of the worse I've ever found in hotels (no pressure, sometimes too hot and sometimes too cold...) and had mold.

You'll also want to know that the number of elevators is insufficient to the number of guests and that the building is very old and people walking on the corridors will make some noise at anytime.

The good things? Free wifi and a nice front desk staff. And location is ok, if not great. Really close to the main train station, but you'll have to walk a good 10 minutes to go to the main sightseeing points.

Love the organic breakfast, the stylish Indonesiandesign in the rooms and the small but lovely spa-area in the basement. Rent bikes and stroll around in the city of Copenhagen. The hotel are close to everything, espesially the main trainstation. Great when you arrive with the airport-train and its just a couple of minutes walk down to the hotel. We always come back to this place and have recomended it to our friends.

This hotel was a very comfortable place to stay. The bed was one mattress. Everything is organic. Even the beverages served at the bar are organic. And, rather than plastic water bottles, you can get a glass pitcher of water from the restaurant cooler. Even the towels are organic. While the towels were absorbent, they were a little scratchy and reminded me of a dish towel rather than a bath towel. Yet, I can see how efficient they are. There are hand knotted rugs everywhere which lend a feeling of warmth. Our room had hard wood floors which appeared hard to clean and that maybe they had not had a deep cleaning in a while - but we were not bothered - we travel with flip-flops. Oh, and they have a lovely terrace in the back. It was a lovely place to stay. I would happily stay at other Axel properties in the future.

Room Tip: Ask for a room away from the street and maybe a higher floor.
