“Cosy and organic”
Reviewed November 6, 2011

This hotel has a top location, just besides the main railway station and it is very cosy indeed. This is one of the few hotels where I feel really welcome: the staff is very friendly and you gladly order something from the bar, because just just want to sit in the lobby on your own or for a chat with the other guests. The hotel is not entirely refurbished, though: the decoration is new, but they should have done something with the rooms first, like the floor. And the bathroom is very small! Unfortunately, there is little water coming from the shower. The breakfast, however, is a real treat where everything is excellent: the scrambled eggs, the bread, the jams, the juices... So we will certainly come back!

We really enjoyed our 4 day stay from 15-18 October. There was an informality about the hotel, which was enhanced by excellent service from all the staff we met. Particularly enjoyed the breakfast buffet - a real feast of flavoursome organic food, which kept us going through the day.
Would recommend Copenhagen as a fantastic place to visit for a short city break, and the AXEL hotel conveniently located near the Central Station (a 15 minute train ride from the airport). The locale does contain a few Red Light establishments, but this being KPH, it's all part of the tapestry. Would strongly recommend a trip to the Louisiana Modern Art Gallery if time permits.

I have stayed in this hotel on 5-6 occasions over the last few years. Have always had a comfortable stay and enjoyed the personal vibe to the place and cozy amenities. I stayed there again on 21-23 Oct, but came away feeling a bit dissapointet for the first time. Maybe the management has become a bit lax due to the hotels popularity? It would be time, in my opinion, to make a few improvements. Not major issues, but still issues that makes me think that I might want to check out another hotel on my next trip. For example, water pressure in the bathroom is so low that it is almost impossible to have a proper shower, esp if you have long hair and want to rinse out shampoo etc. I heard several other guests also complaining about this in the reception. Also drainage in the sink etc was very bad and made it impossible to brush your teeth without keeping turning the water on an off. The cleanliness in the bathrooms are not really up to the standard it used to be. It is certainly not dirty, but little details like bathroom fittings and nooks and crannies could do with a more thorough scrub. The furniture in the bedroom looks a bit worn also. On the plus side, staff is still very friendely and informal, the reception area still a nice place to hang out with a coffee or a glass of wine (and a necessity if you want to work since wifi is not really stable in any of the rooms I've stayed the last couple of years). The breakfast buffet is as great as ever and being available until 12 should suit everyone. And can recommend the massages in the spa, one of the most effective I've ever had. Even with a room facing the street, we had no problem with noise. The area is also safe despite some dubious establishements close by and very central for walking everywhere + great for making a quick exit with the tube to the airport from the Central station.

It was my second stay at this property with my wife - and purpose was just a "night away from the usual at home". We had booked a Junior Suite but to our very big (and very pleasent indeed) surprise we were upgraded to one of their Penthouse Suite rooms which has their own private roof terasse with a super nice hot tub... At the price (dkk 1600) it was nothing less than excellent. We had planned to "picnic" at the privacy of the hotelroom bringing a lot of goodies from Løgismose - so this was perfect.

The room itself is nice, not very big actually but it has a nice sitting area with nice space for two, a seperate-ish bedroom, large bathroom with bathtub and shower. A nicely stocked minibar as well.

The hottub on the roof terrace was set at 34 degress C - a bit cold for our taste so after a quick dip glancing at the setting sun I bumped up the heat to 40 degress. A few hours later it was around 38 and VERY nice indeed to dive into sipping a glass of wine and looking at the almost completely cloudless sky featuring stars and a full moon. All that in the very centre of Copenhagen. The hottub is large with plenty of space for two.

At least in our room on the 6th floor it was quite and nice all night even though with stayed on a Friday night with a lot of stuff going on in the city.

All in all very recommended even if you do not get an upgrade :) Nice staff and nice cosy place all in all. The breakfast is somewhat expensive, but very nice too.

Room Tip: Go for a room as far up as possible :)

I realise that Copenhagen is expensive but £200 a night in this boutique hotel is quite overpriced.
It's boutique in the sense that it's quite small and a cosy feel. Markets itself on organic and natural.
Reception - door locked Probably as it's in quite an interesting area where drugs are on sale and after dark ladies of the night openly tout for business and harass you walking down the street. The reception itself is pretty. Has a bar and an organic (waste of time) restaurant.

Room: superior room had balcony to smoke on. Nice bed.Small bathroom with shower. No space around sink for toiletries.

Amenities: organic shower gel shampoo and body lotion provided - didn't smell great to be honest. Towels made from organic cotton but rough on the skin.

Location - was in walking distance of attraction but most things in copenhagen are.

Overall - overpriced and trying to be something it's not. Would I stay again? No. I'd stay nearr the old town or pay a similar price for one of the big brand chain hotels.

We were two couples travelling in Copenhagen for a weekend. After reading about the Axel Hotel Guldsmeden, we were really excited about staying here, we even booked Superior rooms.
After passing a five star strip-club(!), we found the hotel, rang the doorbell for entering, and were met by a very nice and welcoming staff. The atmosphere in the lobby was really cosy and nice, and we were even offered a glass of wine as a nice welcome. So, first impression - very good! We got a room on the same floor as the lobby, towards the back yard. It looked good, and with a huge lovely bed. The bathroom looked at first very good. A stone basin and bathtub, and a latter for the towels. Looked really good, and we liked the whole "eco-feel".
The small "hall" had closets, but had hardly room for a medium-large suitcase. The whole room was very dim lighted. The main room had also very dim light, there were only lights by the bed. There were a couple of chairs and a table in the room, and also a sofa and a minibar. The little refrigirator was noisy, so we had to unplug it to be able to sleep. There was also some noise from the backyard at night, that made it hard to sleep. But the bed itself, was very good, if you like a soft bed!
So, back to the bathroom; It looks great. Love the bathtub and the washbasin, and the whole look of it. But here comes the reason we value this stay so low... There was no shower! To shower, you need to stand in the tub, holding the "showerhead" with one hand, and trying to shampoo your hair with the other. You can choose to sit and shower, but the bathtub was really cold to sit in. After showering, you need to dry yourself with a towel that hardly makes you dry (like a stiff kitchentowel), and then drying the whole bathroomfloor with it. I can not see how eco-friendly this is, having to wash all the towels every day. I would rather have a terry towel, and use it twice.
There were eco shampoo, conditioner and bodysoap available in the bathroom, very good.
They offer a eco breakfast, that looked really good, but we never got to try it. The breakfastroom was full, so we had to walk to a place nearby. The other place did not offer ecological food, but they had a huge buffet, and was really great. And cheaper than Axel.
So to conclude; friendly staff, nice lobby with calm music and welcoming and cosly atmosphere, good soft bed, a bit noisy and poor lighted rooms, good looking bathrooms but terrible in use, too crowded breakfastroom. Too expencive compared to what you get.
