“Very nice boutique hotel”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed June 19, 2011

I have stayed at other Guldsmeden hotels before and I like their concept. The rooms are very nicely decorated and on the small side. If you like a lot of room, this is not the hotel for you. One of the real treats here is their organic breakfast buffet. You also get free WiFi in the rooms. The only thing missing is a gym.

This small boutique hotel located close to the train station and the very tame red light district, has very charming rooms which use towels and sheets that are made out of organic cotton. The shampoo, soap and conditioner are also locally sourced, produced by small manufacturers who put a lot of love into their craft. I actually wonder if the toilet paper was organic too? Given that this is an old European style building, the rooms are not very big. Matter of fact, our bathroom was nearly bigger than our bedroom! And the shower, I guess was organic too, for it was hard to get the right temperature given that no matter how you turned the knobs, the water temperature would fluctuate from cold to hot to cold. Nonetheless, it all somehow seemed part of the organic experience in this quirky and charming little hotel. The staff were excellent and the restaurant in the lobby area served the most delicious breads, organic juices and beers, and cold platters. The only other improvement I would ask for is to get proper black-out curtains. Do you know what time the sun rises in Denmark in the summer?

Room Tip: rooms facing inner court yard are bigger

Here for five nights. The Axel claims to be green hotel and to some extent there are signs : motion activated lights, CFLs in the rooms, organic towels, recycled toilet paper, low- flush toilets etc. This is all complemented by the “earthy” bali-inspired décor. On the other hand, from a user perspective, some of the innovations fall flat. For instance, the towels feel like burlap. And the lack of a shower curtain means that the whole bathroom gets soaked during showers.

There are some service issues that could be called “typically european” (ie no service). For instance, when I checked in around 4pm, the trash in the bathroom was still full from the previous guest. I asked for it to be emptied twice. It was not. When I inquired the following morning, the hotel gave me the excuse that it wasn’t emptied because housekeeping had gone home for the day already, as if to disclaim all responsibility for it. The safe was also locked when I checked in and after asking twice for it to be opened, to no avail, I gave up. The hotel has bikes, in theory, although since the service is run by another company, they can only be rented under certain conditions and for the whole day only.

On the plus side, there is a computer in the lobby for free printing, in addition to the free wired broadband in the rooms. .

The location of the hotel is good, close to the “main drag”, central station, and conveniences. Overall, the hotel is “reasonably priced” according to European standards, but one also does get the typical European non-service approach to service.

Beautiful eco-hotel! Our junior suite was small but lovely! The bed was a dream, sleept so well. No noise from the street eventhough we were on the first floor. The hotell is located in the hotell district behind the central station. The location is the only thing to doubt. The Isted Street is just around the corner and my husband was offered three prostitutes, cocain and marijuana when he went out for snacks! For the rest great eco-products in the shop. Wonderful organic breakfast!

I'm just back from my CPH office and as is the norm everthing was up to the standard I have come to expect. I say office because normally when I stay here I'm at work with a little bit of pleasure.
The room was smart and the minibar filled with more than just the normal junk. The bathroom was imaculate. Everything was in place from razor, toothbrush and all the body lotion a Norwegian fisherman could want (and needed).
I had a fairly important evening meeting and the wife thought it might impress if I ironed my shirt. What a pain! The only thing I enjoyed about this was the splended full sized board and the nifty top of the range iron which crisped up my salty collar a treat.
The staff can only be called the worst most sarcastic bunch of proffesionals I've had the great fortune to stay with. My problems seem to be a joke to them that they fix in a matter of seconds with a fantastic smile and at the very least a good negative comment.
The food was excellent and plenty of it.
Not much more to say except I'll be back for more. PS the newspaper man I had with me was impressed too and he's spent half his life in hotels.

Room Tip: Smile and generally the rest just happens

If you want to be close to the Central train station the Alex is a great choice. This is a four star hotel with cozy rooms at better than market rates. Located two short blocks from the train station the Alex was a perfect choice for our one night stay. Excellent wifi in the room with a fast connection. The rooms are better than average in size for Europe. We had a sitting area that was seperate from the double bedroom The bathroom had an oval tub and a large shower. Nice hotel!

Room Tip: Check the hotel's web site for specials

Recently back from 3rd stay at the Axel hotel Guldsmeden, and again very happy so finally decided to review. Lovely rooms w nice if somewhat fanciful decor, charming and helpful staff, very convenient location (two streets from main station) and to my Scandinavian wallet very good value for money. The back garden connects to reception and restaurant, lovely for a glass of wine on a spring evening.
The hotel is in the Red Light District, but not anything I have not encountered in other major cities, I have never felt unsafe or bothered. Have had rooms facing the street 2 of 3 times, and was more bothered by emptying of bins in the backyard than by street noise.
Breakfast is varied and tasty, had it on two occasions and never experienced trouble w empty trays or not being able to find a table that I see others describe.
Have not tried the spa, but tempted. The in-house toiletries are out of this world, I am addicted to the shampoo and conditioner and very annoyed that I forgot to buy a bottle of each this time round...

Room Tip: Balcony rooms face back of hotel
