We stayed at this hotel on the last night of our 8 night trip to Denmark. The location is excellent and the rooms are spacious and breakfast is very good. I have no complaints.

What was extrodinary is that we checked in on a Saturday and there was nobody working the front desk except for Kasper, a very dedicated agent working, it seemed like, 20 hours a day. They didn´t need more staff, it seemed. But I have a sneaky feeling that we only felt that way because this specific member of the staff was on that weekend.

He answered my numerous questions with confiedence and when me and my wife were finding our way outside the hotel, he simply made his way all the way outside to direct is exactly where we were on the map and where we wanted to go on our only day for sightseeing.

This is the kind of hotel where you can find plenty of faults if you really want to but as long as they have dedicated people like Kasper, taking care of their guests, you forget about any niggling irritations.

Stayed just one night before a Baltic cruise. Staff excellent, room fine and a comfortable bed. It was a hot night so we slept with the window open and it was noisy but still slept well, Breakfast very good and in all a good value city hotel but be warned the city is so expensive!

Room Tip: Keep the window closed if possible

Location is good - close to Railway station, Vesterbro and Frederiksberg Neighborhoods. If you are in Copenhagen for tourism you will not have long transport times to all major attractions. Price was reasonable for Copenhagen in June (at around 1,000 DKK per night for a double, no breakfast)- overall good value for money. Nice lobby with modern furniture. Staff service-minded and friendly. Our rooms not very spacious but still adequate and with ok furniture/layout. Seemed reasonably clean. Free Wi-Fi worked ok, but a PC/printer available for guests in lobby proved to be excruciatingly slow. Two major downsides also mentioned by other travellers: (1) Can be noisy as Vesterport Station is just across the Street from main entrance of hotel. This will mainly be a problem in hot summer days, however, as the lack of AC might force you to open the windows, which will normally do an OK job at keeping most of the noise out (2) Lousy beds - far too soft.

We picked this hotel after extensive search through list of Copenhagen hotels and b&bs, looking for a combination of reasonable price, convenient location, and needed amenities. We were very pleased with our result. Upon check in mid-morning, we were graciously offered an upgraded room on third floor for immediate occupancy (posted occupancy time = 3 pm) which had nice little sitting area, good bathroom with deep tub and mounted shower which could also be hand held. Room faced rear of building and was quiet. Breakfast buffet consisted of usual Danish variety of breads, bread rolls and pastries, cold cuts, pate, cheeses, limited fresh fruit (orange, pineapple and melon slices), scrambled eggs, bacon, meat balls, and crepes; soft- and hard boiled eggs, yogurt, juice and hot drinks. Computer was available in lobby but was a bit frustrating to operate. However, it gave opportunity for observing check-in and -out and we were impressed by unfailing competent, friendly handling of guests and readiness to be of assistance. Excellent language competence by staff. For us, a very great convenience was the hotel's location: we could walk out of the door, cross the street right onto a short gangway to an elevator to the platform of the S-train (city system) station Vesterport (where the escalators at the front of the station did not work during our entire nine-day stay in Copenhagen!), from where we could head in either direction to link with other trains, buses and Metro of the splendid local public transport system, where escalators and elevators generally DID work, including wrestling our luggage from and to the airport. My wife, who is a native of Copenhagen, and I agreed that we had made a most fortunate choice with Hotel Mercur, were satisfied with the price, and would gladly stay there again.

stayed 3 nights in this hotel with 2 friends while over watching the Copenhagen v Chelsea game, got a really good deal which included breakfast (hot and cold buffet). Cannot fault hotel for cleanliness or service, made very welcome on our arrival and the staff behind the desk were very helpful. Unfortunately while we were there the weather was absolute baltic, however the rooms were adequately heated. It is just around the corner from Tivoli and convenient to Stroget the main shopping area which has plenty of shops and bars. All in all I cannot fault this hotel.

I spend 2 nights here in the end of October and it were my last two nights in this hotel.

When travelling for business, it is my goal not to spend too much on the hotel. Obviously the main goal is to make money instead. Therefore I always consult Tripadvisor before I go on a trip. I've been lucky a couple of times, when I came across some hidden gems here and there... but not this time.

The room on the 2nd floor was big enough. It was facing the street and I had read about the loud trains that pass by. My own fault... I knew this was a risk and indeed ... sleeping was difficult with the window closed and impossible with the window open. Not the hotel's fault anyway, they can't help it. Unfortunately the neighbours were playing live music as well on the first night and I heard every note they played... while trying to sleep.

Some other inconveniences can be taken care of by the hotel :

* The rooms are dated and I must say, I've slept in dorm-rooms that were better looking.
* A good shower can really take a load off. Unfortunately the water was warm, but not hot and the beam was so weak it was frustrating me. I presume women with long hair can not wash it in this shower.
* The free WIFI is organized by an external company... again UNfortunately not compatible with my Blackberry. So as for an added value, this was rather a minus. The hotel called up the WIFI support technician. He was going to guide me through the setup... but he didn't succeed. I was doomed to stand up in the hotel lobby checking my mails on the one desktop that was provided.
* When I took the stairs, I passed by the place where the staff and some guests would go to have their smokes. Apparently nobody had bothered to empty the ashtray in the last century or so and it was a revolting sight.
* The breakfast staff seemed only interesting in taking the breakfast voucher and that was it for service. They were very good at this though... guests would make an average of 2.5 steps into the breakfast-corner before they were asked for their voucher. Asking if they would like coffee or tea seems the minimum to me, even in a buffet-formula.

Briefly.... no, I won't be back. It's a hit-and-run kind-of hotel, once you've been here, I don't believe you will return the next time you're in town.

Dear VendenBoschFamily,

Thank you very much for taking your time to review your stay at our hotel. We value all feedback greatly, both positive and negative, as this works as our foundation on which we base our continuing work of making Best Western Mercur Hotel an even better experience for our many guests.

We are very sorry to learn that you have had problems relating to noise, especially because we have actually just replaced all windows and balcony doors, facing the street, with soundproof double glass windows. This was done to eliminate the noise coming from the street and railway and before receiving this review, we were actually convinced that the problem was solved. After replacing the windows and balcony doors we have tested the sound volume inside several guest rooms facing the street on different floors and found that the db was very low. Actually it proved to be much lower than the average level of noise in hotel rooms outside the city.
After replacing the windows and balcony doors we have not had any bed feedback regarding this issue, other than yours and we will of course have the sound level in the guest room tested again.

This whole thing is of course not helped by the fact that loud music was played during you stay. We have investigated this and found that the music came from a nearby theater/TV-studio which is broadcasting a live TV show with many audiences and loud live music.
We are currently in negotiations with the company behind this show and we are positive that we will find a solution which eliminates this noise problem in the future.

Please find below answers and resolutions to your bullet points:

Outdated rooms:
- All guest rooms was actually completely renovated in late 2007 with new interior, new painting and new super comfortable mattresses. We have heard before that some guests do not like the décor, taste is as different as people, but we have not heard that our rooms seem outdated. We would really appreciate if you had time to specify what you found to be wrong with the room.

Shower:
- We are very sorry to hear that the shower in your room was not satisfying. Our housekeeping- and technical department has now checked up on all showers to make sure the showerheads are not calcified.

WIFI:
- After reading your review we have been in contact with our WIFI vendor and asked them if it is correct that they do not support Blackberry phones. They have assured us that they do support all WIFI receiving devices and they do not know why you were not helped properly with your problem. Both they and we apologize for this.

Ashtray:
- Regarding the ashtray, we can confirm that this is being emptied pretty regularly, but many people are using it as this is the only placed both staff and guests are allowed to smoke on the hotel property. The ashtray has now been moved away from sight, to prevent other guests from being offended.

Breakfast:
- We are sorry that you did not find the service level of the breakfast restaurant satisfying. We offer a buffet concept and focus on making the selection and quality of the breakfast as good as possible instead of putting the resources into serving by the tables. Most of our guest prefers this way, but some, as you, prefers another way of doing it. The collecting of breakfast vouchers is necessary to calculate how many guests have had their free breakfast on a given day.

We are of course very sorry that you have had this experience at our hotel and that you state you will not come back. We can only apologize for the inconvenience the above mistakes has coursed you and let you know that actions have been taken to prevent this from happening to other guests in the future.

Once again, thank you very much for your review.

Best regards,
Best Western Mercur Hotel
