“Decent brunch place on langeline”
Reviewed November 28, 2012 via mobile

I went to Tollboden a few times in the past couple years with some nice experience and some less nice.

First of all I think to appreciate the location and the food it is better to go for brunch on a sunny day and enjoy the terrace outside. If you go late in the evening I think it becomes some kind of lounge bar / club place (unless there was a private party) so it might be fun but be careful it might get loud as well...

The food was actually all right and the price decent for Danish standards. Also it is one of the only restaurant in the area...

Finally you have to go and order / go pick up your food at the counter but I guess that's fine once you know how it works. And don't count too much on the quality of service anyways as I have had some bad experience: waiting for 10-15 in front of the counter, saying hi and waving at waiters but only got a nasty and unfriendly "yes coming son" and still ended up waiting another 10min...

Overall, if you are in the area and looking for a decent place to grab a bite then stop by this place but it is probably not worth going there specifically though as there are many nicer places in Copenhagen.

“Posh upmarket place w. little out of the ordinary”
Reviewed September 25, 2012

Toldboden is one of the upmarket places that has sprouted all over the Copenhagen harbour front in recent years.

The building is an old renovated customs house in the old free-harbour of Copenhagen, just right next to the water and the scenery are nothing less than outstanding - that is if you don't have one of the large cruise ships, calling at Copenhagen harbour during the summer, blocking your view.

The location is, from a tourist perspective, excellent. 5 mins. on foot from The Little (highly overrated) Mermaid. 10 mins. on foot from the Queens castle. A stone throw from the liberation museum and "Kastellet" the old Copenhagen citadel, which is still in use by the Danish army and open to the public.

The food and the service where it all falls apart. We had salmon riellette, fish & chips and for desert a strawberry cake and a cup of coffee.

The salmon riellette was plentyful and boring - no spices, no twist, just flaked boiled industrial salmon that you are force fed all over Scandinavia - It may impress someone not used to the abundance of salmon we have in Scandinavia, but not a native scandinavian. The accompanying bread was listed on the menu as freshly baked - The menu just didn't mention what year. It was stale and disintegrated when we tried to break it up.

The fish and chips was breaded lumps of Pangasius - another cheap fish that has hit the European stores and restaurants recently. Pangasius can be a nice fish and is a cheap alternative to Cod and Haddock that these days are more precious than gold or street grade cocaine. However, if you bread it up, drop it in the deep fryer and fry it to smithereens, then it is not suitable for human consumption. Accompany it by fries that have been boiled in the same fryer so they both taste of fish, only boiled once so they are soggy and smeared in the remains of the breadcrumbs from the fish, then you have the infallible recipe for a disaster meal.

The strawberry cake was ok, but nothing more. It bore clear signs of having been prepared a day in advance and left in the fridge and it was served too cold on a soggy marcipan base. The best part of the meal was the coffee to accompany the strawberry cake - it was freshly made, from freshly ground beans and was both strong, aromatic and delicious.

Service??? Where?? - The Toldboden restaurant concept is that you have to order at the counter, oay in advance and pick up your food at the counter. In my encyclopedia that is a cafeteria - not a restaurant. The lone high school girl behind the counter had too many tasks to handle and too little cognitive bandwidth to deal with these tasks. She couldn't cope with taking orders, making coffee, buzzing customers whose food was ready for pickup, clear the tables, sweep the floor etc. Poor girl.

At night time, Toldboden dubs as a night club and I guess this is where they make their real revenue and the daytime restaurant (cafeteria) is mainly aimed at tourists, passing by from the Queens castle to The Little Mermaid, dropping in for a bite of lunch. The good thing about tourists is that they rarely call again and they rarely complain (if it wasn't for TripAdvisor).

My recommendation: Go for a cup of coffee or an overpriced draught beer and enjoy the scenery - Avoid anything that comes out of their kitchen. There are plenty of cheaper and better alternatives in the vicinity.

“Fried Fish: Danish Style”
Reviewed September 6, 2012

Toldboden was recommended to me by a chef-friend who noted that this is where many prominent chefs dine on their days off. It is a simple restaurant. One goes to a counter and orders, and the choices are few. One is given a buzzer for when the food is ready. The specialty is fried fish and chips, which they do expertly. Tasty salad and dessert. The space is large, spare, and, when I was there, largely empty, but pleasant in a Scandinavian modern way. They also have picnic tables outside, with a nice view of the waterfront. The restaurant is a short, few minutes walk from the Little Mermaid statue. Prices are reasonable. Most restaurants in Copenhagen are closed on Sundays, In contrast Toldbogen is open until 21:00.

“Self-service concept allows for quality food at a reasonable price”
Reviewed August 28, 2012

There is a limited menu with mostly seafood options. The fish is of a very good quality and the portions are large. I wish I would have ordered only two or three courses instead of four. I wasn't impressed with the smoked cheese dip, but the peel & eat prawns were delicious and so was the smoked salmon entree. Because it is basically self-service (go to the bar to order and the pager buzzes when it's ready), the prices are relatively reasonable compared to similar quality restaurants in Copenhagen.

“Disapointing”
Reviewed August 25, 2012

We planned our visit to Toldboden restaurant as a group of 4 (2 couples) that was our first mistake. It is definitely a place where you should go out in groups.
On their website a special menu was announced: sustainable fish 4 courses for 250dkk. Definitely interesting and a good price as well. Unfortunately the staff informed us that they had a visit of the food and hygiene services and they were forbidden to prepare the fish that they had planned for this "special menu" as they hadn't been able to keep it to the right temperature. Not a very good sign to start...
The place is hype and people seat in rather big common tables.
Being only 4 and wanting to be able to chat we relocated to one of the (few) tables a little on the side and with a view. It took 25 minutes to get hold of a member of the staff to have the table cleaned. They did so reluctantly...we were definitely interrupting their chitchat.
We ordered our mains (decided to skip the starter as we were informed that they would be served together with the main anyway). We went for the fish and chips. Definitely a small portion... not very interesting. The fish still had a lot of bones. Then we did ask for salt and pepper and it took the staff again 10 minutes to find some for us. Is that such a surprise that people want to use salt and pepper on their food?
Well..all and all a disappointing visit. The food wasn't worth it. The atmosphere not made for a "quiet dinner" (fair enough) and VERY poor service.
