Owner description: The National Museum of Denmark is the largest culture-historical museum in Denmark. The museum is a dynamic cultural institution offering a great variety of exhibitions and activities. Our artefacts come from all over the world and from different time periods. We can take you on a journey, traveling thousands of years through time and experience everything from the Danish national treasure the Golden Horns and the 3000 year old Egtved Girl to African masks and Egyptian mummies. In the Children's Museum, you can see and try things that show how people ate, worked, played and dressed hundreds of years ago in different environments.

The permanent collection of Arctic culture is fascinating, with really fine pieces of decorative arts and clothing. The Vikings exhibit is shallow enough for people with limited time/attention to go through and get the highlights, but it allows people with more time/interest to dig into the details. The book/gift shop add to the experience, with gifts to enlighten or at least amuse in a broad range of prices. Free on Sundays, closed on Mondays, worth a visit.

This is a serious unvestigation of Danish history and it would take a day or two to see the whole collection. We focused on the ancient history through to the Viking times and the scope of the collection was impressive, but it was a bit dense. As my wife memorably pointed out as we viewed our tenth case of flint scrapers, "When you've seen one flint, you've seen them all...." The Sun Chariot and the silver cauldron, not to mention the bog body sacrifices and viking ship were well worth a look and there is a lot of information!

There is more than a bit of everything in this free national museum, housed in a large and confusing building with two courtyards. Especially interesting for students of Danish history and domestic life. We missed the Viking exhibit. The cafe appeared to be offering free food! - but we were rudely awakened and charged $10 for a couple of cups of coffee. Overall, this public museum needed money invested in it.
