Owner description: The National Museum of Denmark is the largest culture-historical museum in Denmark. The museum is a dynamic cultural institution offering a great variety of exhibitions and activities. Our artefacts come from all over the world and from different time periods. We can take you on a journey, traveling thousands of years through time and experience everything from the Danish national treasure the Golden Horns and the 3000 year old Egtved Girl to African masks and Egyptian mummies. In the Children's Museum, you can see and try things that show how people ate, worked, played and dressed hundreds of years ago in different environments.

The National Museum is one of the best attractions in Copenhagen. Not only is it free to visit, it has amazing exhibits. As you enter, there are staff to help answer any questions that you may have. We did use the lockers to store our bags and coats (it was cold that day). It did take a 10dkk coin to use them but you get the coin back at the end.
My family spent all of our time in the history of Denmark section. The exhibits were great and the descriptions in English were very helpful. The Viking artifacts were great. We really wanted to see them. We were amazed at the amount of artifacts in this area. You could spend several hours just in this section.
It is a lot of walking so take some comfortable shoes. This museum is really worth the time to visit.

We visited the prehistory section of the National museum....which features a number of memorable and finely preserved prehistoric ancestors....some preserved in dug out boats, with hairpins, rings, hair.....very moving.

We started with a lovely salad/ryebread lunch in the gallery cafe - which gives good views of the modern museum interior; and all this is FREE!

A lovely way to llok & learn for a few hours.

The section on the early history of Denmark was excellent, with really good descriptions. Other sections, e.g. the collection of artefacts from around the world had fewer descriptions, which meant you didn't always know what you were looking at.

We came to this museum 2 hours before closing time which was a big mistake as it is just huge with loads to see. It was a welcome break from the freezing temperatures that we had been walking around in. There is a huge wealth of information over 3 floors with a range of different exhibits and topics. You could easily spend a full day here - it's a great museum. Oh and it's free!! Anything that's free in Copenhagen is a bonus. You won't be disappointed if you go here.

My partner and I were visiting Copenhagen in February for a short break away. We really wanted to look around and find out more about Copenhagen so we were delighted when we found out about the national museum. Not only did it give us a break from the freezing temperatures it was also free which I couldn't believe as it was packed with things to see. The museum is a classical 18th century mansion located a stones throw from the city centre. Inside the museum you have floor upon floor each taking you through the cultural history from vikings and egyptians straight through to the present day.

You could spend as long as you wanted in the museum and there was also a coffee shop if you wanted lunch. There were facilities for children too so perfect for families and wheelchair access. If your in Copenhagen then this is a great place to visit and free! What more could you ask for!
