Not only is the collection stunning, but the building itself with its central courtyard is wonderful.

The NY CARLSBERG GLYPTOTEK MUSEUM in Copenhagen, Denmark is undoubtedly one of the best in Europe in terms of collections, presentation, facilities and access…..most important, its free on Tuesdays! (10;00am – 17:00pm), and 11-12 minutes walking distance from Copenhagen Central or Vesterport train stations. Its across the road from the world famous TIVOLI Gardens…don’t be tempted to turn left instead of right!
I have been going there over a dozen times since first visit in 1967, and the last visit was December 2019. Looking forward to my next visit.
The exhibits are built around the personal collection of Carl Jacobsen, the son of the founder of the Carlsberg Breweries. Yes, Haut Culture, compliments of Carlsberg beer! The Glyptotek’s private collection contains over 10,000 works of art, sculpture and archaeological objects through a time span of 6,000 years, such as:
• Ancient Mediterranean of more than 6.000 years, – from the early high cultures of the Middle East to the birth of the Roman Empire.
• The Egyptian Collection, with more than 300 works…Ramses II, Tutankhamun, Akhenaten and Nefertiti, and more.
• Ancient Greeks and Romans sculpture from around 600 BCE with the Greeks to c. 400 CE and the Roman Empire.
• French Masterpieces of the 19th century…great collection of Impressionist art from Monet, Rousseau, Courbet, Cézanne, Manet, Degas, Gauguin, etc..to Post-Impressionists, van Gogh, Toulouse-Lautrec, Bonnard, etc. and sculpture..from Degas, Picasso, Matisse, Rodin, etc
In addition to the permanent exhibitions above there are always special collections on various themes or loans from other museums around the world.
There is glasshouse dome designed as a Winter Garden for brunch/lunch/coffee n teas, snacks, or chilling out among palm trees and fountains. Plenty of benches to sit on! As a septuagenarian, that is much appreciated!
Repeat, Tuesdays are free entry (10:00 am – 17:00 pm.). Mondays are closed.
Prices: a) Under 18yrs free, b) 19 – 27yrs & students DK 85 (discount), c) 28yrs up DK 115 and d) Senior Citizens DK 115 (!!!). This has not stopped me from returning again and again….!
Enough displays to keep you happily occupied for a day, with tasteful lunch break in between. Definitely a MUST for art lovers! Fluent English everywhere.

We visited on a Tuesday, which is free entry. Excellent gallery with a number of French impressionist paintings and a large number of sculptures. Really enjoyed our visit.
