First Hotel Esplanaden
Ranked #100 of 118 Hotels in Copenhagen
Reviewed May 13, 2012

Despite its great location in central Copenhagen close to the Royal Palace and next to impressing nature the First Hotel Esplanaden has now twice in a row demonstrated the greatest lack of hospitality that I've ever experienced in a hotel: Every time they get the booking details totally wrong and the young female receptionist couldn't care less. Her way of being rude to all guests is really impressing. Furthermore, the rooms are run-down and the breakfast mediocre. Go somewhere else...

Good budget hotel, central but quiet next to the Churchill park. Only 5 - 10 mins walk to major attractions like The little mermaid and Nyhavn and the shoppingstreet "strøget".

Our room om the 4th floor was a perfectly ok size with good beds and a small but fine bathroom and a view of the park. No extras like hairdryer, minibar or coffee/tea maker, but there is free coffee/tea in the lobby. Breakfast was good.

The hotel is right next to "cafe petersborg" that serves awesome danish lunches, and there is also other good restaurants in the area.

I would absolutely recommend this as a budget hotel in Copenhagen. The price was low as I got a special weekend offer, so I am very satisfied with my stay!

My single room on 1st floor was roomy and had a comfortable double bed with duvets, good size bathroom with shower only, no tub. Had pleasant view of park. All the usual facilities including a large screen TV. For UK travelers there were no kettles in rooms but free tea and coffee machine in lobby plus a refrigerator full of drinks and snacks at extra cost. Free access to Internet on 2 computers in the lobby. Comfortable deep leather sofas and chairs in lobby but lighting was low level and could not see to read my book. The breakfast was self serve buffet style and very comprehensive with scrambled eggs and lovely crisp bacon. Meats, cheeses, breads, cereals, juices, nuts, yogurt, fruit, you name it they had it.....could last you well past lunch time and helpful as food is expensive in Copenhagen . Nice looking Cafe next door and one or two popular ones nearby as well as bistros on Nyhavn
Location is a bit of a walk from Ostergade rail station otherwise slightly longer walk to nearest Metro at Kongens Nytorv (square is also useful at north end of main shopping street Stroget)but bus service is excellent if you get the combined rail/bus/metro strippcard at the airport.. Bredgade is one way street with buses going north; to go south, walk one block over to the parallel street.
Biggest disappointment was the water was tepid for 3 days - shower marginally better but not HOT. Complained twice but no one actually DID anything to find out WHY. Room nice so didn't really want to move...They suggested a refund/reduction in my room rate but have not seen anything to date.
Have to use lift at all times to access floors ; there was a staircase but it was really the emergency internal fire escape with clanging metal steps and doors that slammed if you didn't watch out - I thought I would wake my whole floor using it !

Room Tip: Room was overlooking main junction but traffic noise was not intrusive.

The room was basic, the carpet looked dirty and all in all not very inviting. The bathroom (shower only) was also basic with only liquid soap provided. The bed was not comfortable and the room was very cold (heating turned right down) and took all night to warm up.

On the plus side there is free internet in the room and the check in and room payment was very straight forward.

So basic, but if all you want to do is sleep and you cannot find anything cheaper it will do.

The hotel is not so conveniently located for the shops or for the metro/train, so if it is raining you may need a taxi.

The rooms in the hotel are absolutely tiny and the bathrooms bonsai! The rooms and bathrooms are quite basic and need some serious repair and refurbishing. More like college hostel rooms. Hardly any staff present in the hotel and in the restaurant.
There are only two good things about the hotel- location and breakfast. The breakfast was good, there was a good spread. The location is good for business and for sight seeing as well. Major business houses (including headquarters of the biggest Shipping Company) are in close vicinity and so are tourist places including the “Little Mermaid”. The hotel building is quite old with some interesting sculptures at the entrance. There is a pay channel to watch movies as well in the room, besides the usual cable channels. There are a couple of computers in the reception which guests can use free of charge for catching up with emails etc. There was coffee and pastry and sometimes even soup, pasta and bread kept near the lobby for the guests in the evening - free of charge

Stayed at Comfort Hotel Esplanaden from July 15-17 2011. The hotel is centrally placed and it only takes a 10 minutes walk from the hotel to Strøget(shopping street), and a few minutes from the royal castle.
The room could have been better though, not quite sure if they were in a process of upgrading the rooms in the hotel but the room we got was a bit worn-out and really needed a upgrading to a more mordern feeling, compared to other Comfort hotel rooms. The double bed was small, about 120 or 140, but it was a bit too small for two people.
Plus: Free wireless high-speed Internet access
