Owner description: The beautiful 400-year-old castle is situated in central Copenhagen's popular park, The King's Garden. The castle was built by one of the most famous Scandinavian kings, Christian IV. Today, the glory of the past can be experienced through the numerous art treasures of the previous kings and queens. Among the main attractions is the Great Hall with the coronation thrones and three life-size silver lions standing guard. The crown jewels and royal regalia sparkle behind the thick walls of the treasury beneath the castle.

If you do one thing in Copenhagen, this is it. One could spend hours enjoying all of the treasures inside. Rooms are full of royal relics. The treasury holds the crown jewels that are remarkable. Very enjoyable. Gardens are pretty too.

“Beautiful Crown Jewels”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed June 15, 2014

The Rosenborg Castle was started in 1606 because Christian IV wanted a summerhouse built beside a new park called The King’s Garden. The castle was enlarged several times until 1710. Rosenborg was used as a Royal residence until that year, when Frederik IV decided to spend his summer at a more modern summer residence. It was then that Rosenborg was used as the setting for the Royal collections. The many well preserved interiors in the castle are very unique. Rosenborg was used as a Royal residence only twice after that date, during times of emergencies. The first was when Christiansborg Palace burned down in 1794 and the second was when the British attacked Copenhagen in 1801.

The museum in the palace includes Christian IV's magnificent collection of riding trappings and parade arms, his costumes, heirlooms and precious artifacts. During the reign of Christian V the Regalia were transferred from Copenhagen Castle, and during the reign of Frederik IV collections of glass and porcelain arrived, as well as the art collections of the dukes of Holstein, captured from Gottorp Castle. The castle is famous for having the Crown Jewels in its basement.

“Best Viewed from the outside”

Interesting building, that is best viewed from the outside. Whilst the Danish Royal Gold is on display it's not worth the entrance fee, especially as there is so much more to see in Copenhagen

“Awesome”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed June 13, 2014

We spent a wonderful morning here. I found the saddle and accountrements for the King's war horse particularly fascinating. The Crown Jewels and the rest of the Treasury were well worth seeing. The palace itself was full of interesting furniture and memorabilia of some of the great kings and queens of Denmark.

“Quite impressive.”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed June 11, 2014

This castle houses many treasures belonging to past kings and queens. The most impressive are the crown jewels and the saddle of Christian IV. It is also surrounded by the Royal Botanical Gardens which make for a delightful stroll.
