“Business in Esbjerg”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed August 24, 2012

Spent a couple of nights in the Scandic Olympic hotel during a recent business trip to Esbjerg in Denmark.

I've stayed there a few times now and I don't know whether they are going through a refurbishment or whether the more well appointed and fresher rooms are on the higher floors but I had a room on the 6th floor this time (there are only 7) and it was very nice and had obviously been recently decorated. Previous times I've likened my room to not much better than a youth hostel dorm (without having to share of course).

Anyway you can tell whether you are on a good floor by the quality of the carpet, as I found out when I stopped at a couple of lower floors in the elevator.

I never ate in the somewhat sterile atmosphere of the restaurant downstairs, but a colleague of mine enthused that he had had one of the best meals he had ever eaten (Coq Au Vin) the previous night in that very same place. Jamie Oliver seems also to have some influence on the catering offerings within the hotel as there are many flyers dotted around the place with his mug shot. The rest was in Danish so I am decucing he has developed the menu and not the colour of the walls.

It's centrally located also both for business and pleasure so all in all a good hotel which is made better when you get a very good room if that makes sense.

Room Tip: Get a room in a higher floor

No ventilation. Much too warm. Very thin curtains (a problem in summer...). Directly on a busy road. Staff not exactly rude, but certainly not friendly or helpful. Grotty, time-warped rooms. The unacceptable low end of generic business hotels.

This is a nice hotel located towards the harbour in Esbjerg but within a short walk of the town square. Some of the rooms in the hotel are old and yet to be refurbished but the ones which have are done are very nice clean and modern. Breakfast is good with a wide ranging buffet and the restaurant has some nice dishes.

Room Tip: Rooms on the West side of the hotel are cooler in the summer but the East side have better views ove...

In this hibernating city this Hotel might be a little shabby. Service was good, Breakfast was good, Wireless was good, but the hotel itself has seen better days. There's no ariconditioning and the rooms are mighty hot and feels humid and needs airing. It was not possible to open windows enough to get sufficient air conditions, so you were stuck in a 28-30 degrees room sweating and gasping for fresh air. Even if it was colder outside, the rooms were superhot. The room had a small noisy manual fan not blowing any air and hardly anything to make things better. The interior hasn't been changed since the 80's even if the carpets were clean enough. The bed had no master switch or any switch at all so you had to get up into the "entrance" to turn on/off lights. the paint came off the doorframes and some tiles were broken. It had a minibar, where two small bottles of water were _very_ much needed in the heat.

Room Tip: avoid this hotel if you are a family with children.

Spent 3 nights in the hotel. The room was very small and basic, but very clean and good service too. I think afterall its worth for the money we paid.

Good location in central Esbjerg - close to port. Room style and corridors very dated - bedroom was quite small, bed comfortable but with a dirty vallance (yuk!). Annoying internet connection that threw you out at every opportunity it got. Lego table in the dining area a definite hit with our 2 year old. Breakfast was the highpoint - great selection of hot and cold food and would be the only reason I would visit again.

I've stayed here 2 nights and really enjoyed the modern, well isolated and spacious room. Breakfast was great, a wide range of cereals, yoghurt, bread etc. and also lactose free products.
The location is central and close to shops, restaurants and the port of Esbjerg.
