“Great below-$200 accomodation”
Reviewed June 9, 2010

I had the pleasure of staying one night in a Single Budget Room at Hotel Guldsmeden in Aarhus. On the plus side:
+ extremely central and charming location, yet very silent at night (great sleep quality)
+ very clean
+ very charming garden
+ free internet
+ healthy and delicious breakfast included
+ fresh coffee and selection of teas available throughout the day
+ friendly staff (with excellent language skills)

On the minus side:
- the TV is mounted under the ceiling at an angle to the bed

I think this is possibly as good as it can get within the below-$200 category. I know where I wll be staying next time that I am in Aarhus. Highly recommended!

Looked forward to staying here after reading other people's comments and it was very relaxing. Had a family room on the top floor, which turned out to be two smallish rooms with an interconnecting door and shared bathroom, which could be locked and separated from other guests. Loved the candles and Billie Holiday music wafting through the hotel downstairs.
There's a separate Italian restaurant which shares facilities with the hotel e.g. if you want a drink in the rear garden, you order it from the restaurant.
Breakfast is delicious with a good range of fresh organic cheeses, meats, fruit juices etc. and chocolate cake!

There was some noise in the night which sounded like the dustmen emptying bins. Also like most of the Scandinavian countries, the curtains are thin, which seems strange as it stays light so late.

There's parking outside on the street, but need to buy a ticket for the first hour of the next morning - check with staff.

If you have children, do 'phone at least a day beforehand to check that they are expecting you. Unfortunately, they let out one of our rooms to someone else, so we had to spend the first night somewhere else that I wouldn't recommend. The staff were very appologetic and offered to pay any additional costs that we incurred and also gave me some complimentary organic shampoo and conditioner. We asked them to 'phone ahead to their hotel in Copenhagen, to make sure that they'd got the children included there and good job we did, because they'd only booked a room for two us. Luckily everything was resolved.

Had heard alot about this place as the hot boutique in Aarhus. Call for a reservation and was told that the promorate was not available but could book one of the larger dbl. rooms....fine so i did. I We got a tiny dbl. room at the first floor to the street side. I commeted to the size to the reception and was adviced this was indeed one of the "larger" rooms. Checked the fireescape drawings in the rooms and could see that was fare from true. Checked other rooms on the same fllor and again i was confirmed.
-"less is more"...yeah rigth!!
Nevermind we were only there for one nigth but didnt sleep as the noise from the street below is horrible.

Plus points that counts will be the free parking, the cute and fresh breakfast & location, location, location.

Would chose another hotel at my next trip to Aarhus though.

Arhus is a hard place to find hotels which arent a chain of internation hotels. I found this hotel by using trip advisor and a lot of googling. The hotel has a kind of boutique hostel feel to it. The staff were very friendly and gave lots of help for days out. We had a room with a 4 poster, which was probably a little big for the room, but never the less a nice touch. Breakfast was very good, lots of fruit, bread, cheese and cooked bits. you could spend hours over it. Location wise the hotel was great just far enough to be out of the noise of the city but close enough to be in the heart in under 5 mins. We aware though that nothing opens on a sunday apart from the musem, so dont expect any last min shopping on that day.

Travelling from Australia for a wedding we had 2 heavy suitcases which we had to haul up the 2 narrow treacherous flights of stairs to our tiny bedroom was the 1st problem! At least we weren't staying any higher!

The tiny bedroom precluded any unpacking

A shower curtain that ended 35 cms (14inches) above the floor and with no sill meant that the bathroom was flooded and was a saftey hazard if anyone chose to use a hairdryer in the dripping wet environment.

Parking was interesting. 100 metres down the road and in through an amazingly narrow gateway parking was provided where the other users parked their cars as if in a random parking compettion. . The fun came when I had to reverse my Peugeot wagon out through the narrow gateway! By the way I am not a shy retiring driver!

Breakfast was good. Mueslis, a great selection of breads, jams, cheeses, cold meats and tea selection and coffee.

I had such a great stay at the Guldsmeden sister hotel in Copenhagen that I looked forward to the same here, but it was not nearly as nice in my opinion.

The good: very helpful staff; cozy sitting/dining room
The bad: rooms perfectly adequate, but not what one would expect for this high price. Bed not that good, very little room, noisy - and I had the superior, not standard, room.

Summary: High price not equal to what you get for room.

This is a lovely hotel, great location (edge of the best shopping area in Aarhus and very convenient for the roads out of town and the ferry to Odden) and extremely friendly staff.

The first time we stayed there the room was on the street side of the hotel. We could not sleep until the very loud music and noise from the bar over the road ended at around 4am, even with the windows shut and wearing ear plugs.

However, when we came back a week later, we were given a beautiful room on the court yard side with a roof terrace. We were completely undisturbed and slept like a log.

Real shame about the noise on the street side - otherwise I would have given this hotel top marks.
