A very nice attraction in Århus, where houses and big Buildings from many years ago are rebuilding in a small town. In seasons there are people who Works like the Old days. A very good attraction to visit :-)

Open-air museum of urban history and culture from 1800 to the 1970's with historical buildings, with streets, shops, yards, homes and workshops.
You can visit living rooms, chambers, kitchens, workshops and museums all year round, and you can meet the people and characters of yesteryear throughout the museum from Easter to 30th December.

Yes - my wife, step-daughter and I are Americans. We married in the US on St. Patrick's Day 2010 ... but had a second, symbolic marriage at Den Gamle By on 31 July 2010 to celebrate with Danish friends and colleagues.

I had been to Denmark many times, living and working in Aarhus in 1997-98 while on leave from my US university at that time - Colorado State University. I returned to Denmark many times and at every opportunity visited Den Gamle By -- "the old town" ... which is now complemented by "Den Ny By" -- "the new town". The "old town" has close to 100 structures ranging in age from approximately 100 to 500 years and that have been taken apart brick-by-brick and stick-by-stick from around Denmark and reassembled in the same way as an "1860s" Danish village (the period of Hans Christian Andersen).

We were married in the "Mint Masters Home" - a magnificent building - by the town priest -- who really does have a Ph.D. in Theology. For entrance to Den Gamle By for ourselves and about ten guests ... the priest ... the mint masters home ... and a four course gourmet meal + wine / soda + individual wedding cakes ... and coverage in one of the major newspapers (because it was the first wedding at Den Gamle By) the total cost was amazingly low ... about $800.

Should you wonder why Den Gamle By is my favorite place in all of Denmark, not to mention Aarhus -- a great city on the Baltic Sea with many wonderful attractions?

Obviously, we have been back to Den Gamle By since moving to Denmark at the beginning of 2012 ... it is a wonderful year round venue with seasonal events.

This was our second visit to this museum & though we loved it again, the visit during the late spring was much better than this time (November). It was eerily quiet (in comparison) but the set up is wonderful and we were able to ferret out a few "characters" to engage in conversation which is a must! The Cooper was so friendly and open he deserves special mention!
The only drawback, I believe is the addition of more modern times (50's) on one end. I dont think it adds to the museum at all. If you can choose, go in spring summer when the place is packed with characters & all the gardens are in full swing but if you must go off-season: you will still enjoy!

Absolutely worth while. Perfect collection of old buildings and perfect illusion of being in a real town. A must see for anybody interested in urban history.
