“Well located hotel but a long walk to our room”
Reviewed August 31, 2013

This hotel is right at one end of the pedestrian plaza in the middle of Odense, so it is well located. It has no parking. We were lucky and got a park over the road after parking restrictions finished and left in the morning before they commenced again. There is a large car-park nearby apparently. Its address is on the pedestrian plaza but its entrance is right on the corner of the cross street with on street parking. Our room was in a separate building to the main hotel building, reached by a long walk including a pedestrian bridge (all "inside" the hotel") but a bit of a pain. The room was clean and large but rather stuffy - it was a warm night and there are no fans or air conditioning. We had to leave the window slightly open and there was noise from the street. The staff were extremely courteous and helpful and English was no problem. The breakfast was terrific with much choice and in a very ornate dining room. The good aspects definitely outweigh the shortcomings though.

This hotel is right in the pedestrian area of downtown Odense, and for automobile access it fronts on a quiet street. It is a short walk from the train station and buses. The rooms are nicely laid out with modern furniture and fittings. They serve a lavish breakfast.

The hotel is beautiful to look at, but forget about getting sleep on a night when you need the windows open for fresh air. Without air conditioning, the hotel is like a sauna without opening windows and getting a fan from the front desk. Fan? They didn't have one. Discos? The several night clubs droned on until past 4 AM with management's response that they can't control them. When a hotel has that problem, they can at least provide a for the room, and lower the price from the outrageous $200+ we were charged to sleep in their annex building. There are nicer, less expensive hotels not in the central disco area for you to choose from. In their favor, they did give me a 50% discount on the room's price, still not worth the 2 hours of sleep we got.

We stayed for 2 nights at the First Grand Hotel in Odense and we were not impressed.
Location, reception and the staff was excellent but the rest was just subpar.

- The water pressure in the shower was non existent and good luck flushing the toilet. I can live with it in a small, remote island in Caribbean but it is unacceptable in a hotel in Denmark.

- The breakfast was just chaotic and served in some kind of conference room. A small tip to the management - prioritize your paying hotel customers before you sell your brunch packages to the public for 100 DKR. Since I've paid for breakfast when I booked the hotel I would love to have a free table.

- Bar closed in a Friday night? Ok, I can live with it. But on a Saturday night it was only open for a "private party" and the rest of the paying hotel guest was not allowed to enter the bar.

Needless to say but next time I'll pick Best Western...

The staff was great! Kind, helpful, attentive. The rooms were large for Denmark and the age of this Grand Hotel. Luxurious entrance, Royal Copenhagen service at the breakfast buffet, and comfortable beds. The interior needs a little TLC, with worn woodwork and peeling paint; but everything worked and the rooms were spotless. Centrally located, walking distance from the HC Anderson Hus and across the street from Fyns Kunstmuseum. I would definitely stay here again and would recommend this hotel for anyone traveling to Denmark.

Externally a beautiful looking hotel and a grand reception are all the elegance expected but then this is let down by the quality in the rooms. The 'minibar' is a selection of snacks and warm drinks on the table. The bathroom looks like it has been refitted on a number of occasions (evidence by the number of rawl plugs in the tiles) The staining to the shower floor made it VERY uninviting. The aircon was conspicuous by its absence and opening windows brings the cacophony of noise from the city centre below

Avoid if you can

We stayed here for three days for a family reunion. Beautiful old hotel. Lots of polished wood and clean paint. Great dining room and fabulous buffet breakfast. Every time I walked down the grand staircase I felt like Lee Marvin in the Dirty Dozen movie. Our room was spacious with a huge white marble bathroom. There is a small bar right off the main lobby that was quite nice. Staff was friendly and all spoke English. Secure car garage a block away. The only thing that annoyed me was the maid service wasn't the best. We would stay here again.
