We have just returned from a very relaxing 2 weeks in Skopelos, we stayed at the Dionyssos Hotel in Skopelos Town. We read a lot of mixed reports but still decided on this hotel and dismissed a number of the less favourable reports as people expecting 5 star luxury for 2 star money . Yes you cant flush toilet paper down the toilet, yes its hot, yes the roads are bad, yes the shower doesn’t hang on the wall but that’s Greece ! ! !
The Hotel is a little dated but is very clean and well maintained. The rooms are quite spacious with lots of wardbrobe space which is a little unusual for Greece. The beds are comfortable although if you are expecting a proper double bed you will be disappointed (2 singles pushed together). The room we had (112) didn’t have the best view from the balcony and was directly over the hotel laundry which could wake you a little too early if you wanted a lie in but I am a light sleeper (didn’t bother my wife at all). The hotel has approximately 50 rooms split across 2 floors - 20 south facing, 20 north facing and 10 facing east which appeared to be the majority of the ‘Executive’ rooms. A room on the upper floor would have been better view but as we spent most of our time on the balcony for a nightcap or 2 the view didn’t really matter.
The pool is a good size and quite deep (1.4m quickly dropping to 2.5m). Whilst we were there you could always get a bed around the pool but I would imagine in the peak season it would be quite difficult as the space was somewhat limited.
The Pool Bar was rather expenses with a 0.5l of Mythos costing 4.6 Euros (It was only 3 Euros at the bars on the Harbour front) and soft drinks being inflated by a similar amount but they didn’t seem to mind about taking your own water/soft drinks to the pool.
The Bar, reception and kitchen staff were very friendly and helpful but the management/owners kept themselves to themselves and very rarely spoke which we found a bit unusual for Greece.
The Breakfast was a continental style breakfast with fried eggs most days and the occasional cheese pies and strange sausages. Nothing fancy but more than enough to see you through to the afternoon.
The Hotel is located off the ring road and as such its only entrance is down a typical Greek back street. Our quad bike was a doddle to navigate up and down but looked a bit trickier with a car
The town is only a 5 minute stroll down hill and is a traditional Greek harbour town with a number of shops, bars and restaurant along the harbour front. For such a little town surprisingly there are quite a lot of places to eat (and quite a few not too !!).
Sergios Two Floor Restaurant – located next to Vtokos bar and the southern end of the harbour, it doesn’t look much but the food is fantastic and Sergio is a very welcoming host.
Nostos restaurant – located directly opposite the daily cruise boats in the middle of the harbour, good food and ideal place to watch the world go by (just don’t sit underneath a tree !!!)
Alexandras – located in the backstreets behind the main square (signposted), great food in a very nice courtyard.
The Garden restaurant – located at the rear of Hotel Amilia on your way out of town, really nice food set in a quiet location for a relaxing evening.
The Owl Bar – next to the Hotel Amilia, great starters but bloody awful main courses
Rodi Restaurant – next door to Alexandra’s , really nice food just not much of it (pretentious presentation doesn’t work in Greece)
There are a few restaurants next to the ‘Internet Café’ at the north end of the Harbour which the food is ok but the service is to get you in and out as quickly as possible.
Would we stay here again ?
Probably , as a last minute cheap deal for a relaxing week
