After reading negative press about the owner George before we went, we were wary but decided that we would give it a go. So here is how we found the experience.......

First the nice stuff:
The apartments are clean and quite spacious and all have a good sized balcony or terrace. The location is quiet and has lovely inland views. It has a small pool and a bar with a dining area that is covered with clear plastic drapes.

Now the not so nice:
The apartments are situated 1 kilometre from bus stop 16, along a narrow road (this was measured by odometre in a friends hire car). As you turn from the road, the apartments are reached by a steep path which has lights either side but because George does not turn them on at night, you will need a torch for safety as there are steep drops at each side of the path and it gets very dark at night
Because of the quite remote location, it is easy to become "a captive audience" and George seizes on this and as a result his prices are high. He charges 2.50 for a small beer and 3.50 for a large beer. This was more expensive than anywhere else we went to on the island. He also charges 8 Euro's for a short but does not tell you this until it's time to pay the bill. Our friends had two main courses that came to about 20 Euro's and they also had four gin and tonics which raised the total bill to 56 Euro's.
Also George has a barbecue on a Sunday evening for which he charges 18 Euro's per person just for the food. You can see that if you have a few drinks as well, you can easily be paying 50 - 60 Euro's per couple for a barbecue meal, seated inside what is in effect a plastic tent. In comparison, we went to a lovely nearby restaurant with great views and had two starters, two mixed grills, wine, two desserts and coffee with excellent service for a total of 28 Euro's.

Now the down right awful:
Our female friend in the apartment below was taking a shower when she turned and looked towards the small bathroom window, to see George staring at her.
On another occasion, I was standing in the bathroom after showering and was still naked. I turned around to see George standing in a position where he could see directly through the apartment right the way into the bathroom.
One morning, my wife left the apartment and was immediately confronted by George who started shouting at her because the outside light had been left on all night. I feel that he was venting his spleen because we had not attended his barbecue on the previous evening.
In summary the apartments are very nice but are spoiled by greedy George and his seedy antics. He can turn on the charm as we saw when he was showing a lady around the site but if you are not spending your time and money there, he can be very brusque and rude. The other guests realised this and as a result there was nothing happening in the evenings there at all. In fact people weren't even bothering to have a drink there in the evening before leaving to dine elsewhere.
Georges wife speaks no English so even ordering a Greek salad from her on the first day was problematic.
So there is an honest account for you - if you do go, spend lots of money with George and keep your windows shut! Good luck!!

Just returned from two weeks at the Marialena apartments. Stayed in bunglalow no 3. The apartments themselves are about half a mile (10-15 min walk) away from the main road. We were aware of this when we booked and didn't find it to be a problem even with young kids the walk was pleasant and didn't bother us. The advantage is that the apartments are tucked away from the noise of the main road and the main strip. They are wonderfully relaxing and peacefull. They have been maintaned to perfection by the owners with the large gardens always looking neat and tidy and the pool area spotless. The apartments themselves and large, modern and airy. The main lounge area has a sofa bed and kitchen and is large enough for a table and chairs and coffee table. It had double shutter doors leading onto the balcony which ran the entire length of the bungalow. The main bedroom was huge and also has the same double shutter doors. We had plenty of room even with a travel cot , baby ands 10 year old.
The maid came everyday and we always had plenty of towels etc...
The only downside is that the bar and food was very expensive. You could pay 8.50 euros for a moussaka or get one down the road for 6 euros. Even the main restuarants in town only charged 7 euros. It cost us 3 euros for a can of lemonade!
If you buy your own drinks and keep them in your fridge and don't eat there then there is no problem. The BBQ wasn't worth 18 euros per adult either.
For accomodation I would give this place 10/10 and it is great for couples and families alike.

My partner booked a week at the apartments in June at short notice and as a surprise 50th birthday present for me. The agent had said there was negative feedback about the owner if you didn't use his facilities. We are of the view that if we are made to feel unwelcome or uncomfortable we simply won't waste our time or money on you. So if he wanted to be off with us he would be cutting off his nose to spite his face.

Due to a 3 hour delay at Gatwick we arrived after 9pm and having been collected from the main road by George [he was straight onto us about the Sunday BBQ but we had other plans] we ate at their restaurant having pizza (very good) and one drink and then going to our room. . I went straight back down to ask for a kettle, the very least I would expect for self-catering! I was offered ketchup by his daughter and after a few more attempts at charades I learned we were expected to use a saucepan to boil water. I was too tired to get worked up about it.

We have been to Skiathos many times and with only a week (6 days really) we wanted to go to us many of our favourite places and restaurants as we could. So aside from having a cocktail and dip in the pool one afternoon before we went into town that evening, we didn't really have time to use their facilities as well. And therein lies the problem with this resort!! George will be your new best friend all the time he is getting your money. Once he realised we weren't likely to drink or eat there he virtually ignored us even though we would call out Good Morning or wave if we saw him. The one exception was when we were having a drink on our balcony one afternoon and he had an inspector checking the premises. He went out of his way to talk to us then!

Our rep had told us our cases would be collected at noon the day we left and at 3pm George would take us to the main road to meet the coach. There was nothing on the agents board (or the card he put thru the door) about a time to vacate the room so we assumed that was noon too. We planned to pack everything, have a swim in the pool and then a leisurely lunch as we couldn't do much else.

My partner was packing and I was in the pool around 10:30 when, in front of other guests, George can storming over waving his arms around and telling me loudly we should have been out of the room by 10am. I told him politely and calmly there was nothing on the agents card or the board and we'd thought it was noon, but we would vacate as quickly as we could . He stormed off mumbling and arm-waving so I called after him louder and louder (so his guests could see and hear he was ignoring me) until he finally turned round. I then apologised loudly and clearly (for the benfit of the other guests all watching intently) but there had been no time given to us and he should speak to the rep if he wasn't happy.

When I told my partner what happened they were livid. We left our cases to be collected and then asked his daighter (George had left) what time we would be taken down to the road. She phoned him (apparently to ask) and then said 3pm. So we left and killed a few hours having a lovely lunch down the road (by the first supermarket as you leave) before wandering back to the Marialena for our lift.

We sat in clear view by the pool and George kept us waiting. Finally, he gestured us to get in the mini-bus and as he drove us down we got ticked off for coming back from wherever we'd been, just for the lift when we could have gone straight to the pick-up. Then came the subject of not using his bar and still expecting a lift. I could not believe his rudeness and I just kept repeating that the rep had told us he would take us to the pickup point. There was no point arguing with him - he's not worth it. Had he not been so rude he would have had our custom all that day.

So there you have it - it seems the more positive reviews are from people who spent more time using the bar than we did and that says everythng really. On the positive side the apartments are nice and the surroundings lovely. Shame it's not nearer the road or maybe we would have been there more.

We have just returned rom a very relaxing holiday in one of Skiathos's best self catering complexe's. We were a little wary about going after seeing some of the negative comments about the owner George, but went with an open mind. Firstly the Marialena, It is easily one of the best self catering places we've ever stayed, clean, excellent pool, comfortable accomodation and very nicely appointed...George & Maria obviously strive to have the very best of everything for their guests and you can see by looking around the complex that they do not scrimp on anything, no cheap plastic sunbeds here!

The rooms are modern and immaculate everything you could possibly need is catered for, beautiful french doors lead out onto a large balcony giving lovely views across the stunning grounds and again all fixtures are of a high standard.

The restaurant is well worth a try, and whilst the bar prices are a little high, this is the same throughout the island, Skiathos is not a cheap place to holiday! Maria's food is excellent and I would highly recommend the Youvetsi or stiffado, both absolutely delicious.

I would reccomend highly getting a car to explore the island, most of the best beaches are only accessible by car and are not served by the bus service that only runs down one side of the island. You can however go from one end of the island for 1.80 euro. George organised our car through his local contact and we paid 35 euro for a 4x4 Susuki Jimny although you can get a Toyota Aygo or similar for around 25 euro.

Finally to George, George could not have been a more genial host if he had tried, nothing was too much trouble for him to ensure our stay was comfortable and I just do not understand why other people find him other than a gentleman. It is true that he does have high standards and I suspect he doesn't suffer fools gladly, but if you approach him with courtesy, there isn't anything George will not do for you (or Maria for that matter).

I would highly reccomend the Marialena for familes, couples, singles etc for a relaxing holiday.

For an off-beach holiday in a magnificent setting the Marialena Village Apartments are hard to beat. They are far ahead of others we saw in the area. The leafy rural location not too far from the fine Aghia Paraskevi beach is extremely attractive. The walk along the lane from the road and beach is a pleasant, easy exercise, with only the hillside slope at the site likely to worry a few. We find it hard to credit the poor reviews referring to the hospitality. Owner George and his family are agreeable and helpful, running an efficient, well maintained operation that has everything needed for a quiet, relaxing and flexible holiday. Home cooking in the cafe/bar lives up to brochure promises. Surrounded by wooded hills with the occasional sounds of farmyard animals, we at least had no wish for the sounds of disco or embarrassing evening entertainment.

We'd seen a few negative reviews before we went on holiday and we were a little worried about the warmth of the welcome we would receive when we arrived.

We had no reason to worry at all. George and his lovely family couldn't have been more welcoming and as expected the accomodation and facilities were excellent. It was our 9th trip to Greece and the Marialena Appartments were by far the best accomodation we have stayed at.

From our first meal on arrival (wonderful Moussaka made by George's Wife Maria) to our final morning George and his family did their utmost to make us feel welcome.

We were there with our 13 year old son and the in-laws were also staying in an apartment in the complex.

The apartments were clean, well furnished and comfortable.

The pool area was immaculate with more than enough sun loungers.

The food was freshly cooked by Maria and George's daughter looks after the bar. The weekly BBQ is well worth the price.

George and his family were very welcoming and George is very rightly proud of the apartments, which are nestled in the hillside and well away from the main road.

Shops and Taverna's are a short walk away

Skiathos itself is a lovely island and we would recomend hiring a 4 wheel drive to explore the less developed side of the island. Skiathos town is great for a day out and you can pick up a boat trip from the harbour (much cheaper than with a tour operator). The bus service in Skiathos is excellent as there is only one main road which goes from one end of the island to the other then back again.
