“Total relaxation”
Reviewed June 11, 2010

Have stayed here many times in past six years and the owners Dounia and Captain have once again improved the facilities. The pool area is now first class and is far more spacious. The ambience is wonderfully relaxing but of course with fantastic weather. Also the hosts make fabulous food all day long so there is no need to venture out in an evening if you do not want. This place is handy for the beach, the town, water taxi option to town if you want. Dounia and Captain make you feel most welcome and are very friendly and accommodating. Also the staff are very friendly and courteous especially Eric or "Mr Sunshine" as we called him.

Just had a week here with the Captain and Dounia and it was just what was needed
Treated like a family friend always hospitable without being intrusive and the food is so good you needn't go searching out in the evenings. Portions are huge, ingredients always fresh and the cooking particulalry grilling is excellent
It is situated within walking distance of Achladies beach and also bus stop nine from which you can go to Bus Stop 1 Skiathos Town one way or Koukanries beach the other way, Bus Stop 26 l believe
A water taxi is also on Achladies to go ito Skiathos Town

The exchange rate hasn't helped with the cost, but bar and food prices have been cut by the proprietors to soften the blow

The pool has been refurbished and was used every day by my eight year old son, who also had his first water ski lesson on Achladies beach - the ski school there is very good and the instructor very patient

If you want a restful holiday with excellent service then look no further, and it is close enough for visits into town too

Bit of a belated review as our lives have been a tad hectic since our return.
Went to Apollo for our anniversary in early September, having not been there for 2 years, and although there was the familiar "family" feeling that felt like comfy slippers to us, there had obviously been a lot of work put in to improve what we considered to be already great accomodation on the island. Firstly the beds - WOW - so good it made us shell out £600 on our return for a new mattress having shown us exactly how comfortable a bed can be. The aircon in every room is great (we've stayed on other islands and at other places around the world and it's really nice to have aircon to let you have a nice temperature to sleep in at night and also if you aren't a "mad dog or Englishman" to come in out of the midday sun to some cool air. There are cushioned sunbeds with the complimentary towels so you don't need to bring pool towels, new chairs - all since we last visited.
We read with interest some of the reviews - size of the bathrooms - hey - this is self-catering accomodation on a Greek Island - if you want a bathroom with a double shower, 2 basins, a bidet, bath, toilet and shower big enough to hold a disco in - why are you going to Skiathos in the first place ! There is so much that is good about Apollo that we felt this a bit pedantic. We have YET to find any self-catering accomodation on this, or any other similar island, equipped to the level of Apollo. As for being by the road - most of the hotels/accomodation on the island is - it's the main road from one end of the island to the others. If you are used to living in the country where you might hear a car every month then maybe if did sound noisy - but fact of the matter is, you notice planes flying overhead more than you do the traffic noise (especially with the music playing quietly around the pool). In our experiences at Apollo there can be guests that are noisier than the traffic on the road below ! Rooms tired - the rooms are less than 10 years old (we know because we were there when they were preparing to lay the foundations) - we think the rooms are extremely well appointed for this type of accomodation and again would be surprised if anyone could quote similar style accomodation with a better level of equipment etc.
The food at Apollo is really good. You MAY find cheaper food at some of the mainstream taverna's, but it won't be cooked to order from fresh, with the chef fussing over it with pride as the Captain does - and we defy ANYONE to say they'd get the size portions you get at Apollo - with the weakness of the pound against the Euro this value for money is something you can't ignore. Amazing steaks, pork chops, and divine langoustine or lobster pasta. Also if you like fish then ask Captain to get you some - he'll go to the market and get some fresh fish (and if there isn't good quality fish he'll come back and tell you "not today - I try again tomorrow" - he won't accept 2nd rate fish) - and on top of that you won't be paying the 40 euro + for a fish that you will in Skiathos town.
We had forgotten how big the mixed grill was - and nearly ordered two ! Thankfully Captain and Dounia told us we didn't need to as it would be wasted - how many other hoteliers would warn you against wasting money in this way - they'd just happily take your money - but not these two.
And this brings us to the main difference between the Apollo and other places - and why it is #1 in the ratings with so many positive reviews .The main difference is the people - I (husband) have been travelling the world for over 40 years, and have stayed at an eclectic variety of establishments from exclusive Maldivian resorts to 5 star hotels all the way down to travelodges, and Captain and Dounia are two of the nicest, friendliest and HONEST "hoteliers" I have ever met in my travels. I would guess that more often than not when totting up people's bills, the customer probably comes out on top. And where they get the energy from I don't know - but I know if they could bottle it and sell it they'd make a fortune - during our stay Dounia was at the pool bar from pretty much 8am every morning until about 2am every night, apart from a small period in the afternoon when she would be dealing with bookings etc, and Captain would keep the bar open until the last guest had decided to go to bed. And even with all that, they bend over backwards to help, and to do their best to make your holiday enjoyable and trouble free.
So to summarise - it seems some people can't be pleased - but it seems to me if people DO go back regularly - then that's not an indication that they don't know better - more a case that they DO know better - and know a good thing when they find one! Yes, the rooms are not "suite" size, but they are so typically Greek and that is what the appeal is - you go to a Greek island not for a "boutique hotel" experience (just as you don't visit the Disney resorts in Florida for history and culture - well - unless your idea of history is "Pirates of the Caribbean" ) - you go to a Greek Island for the smell of the olive groves, the sun, the food, the wine, the people, the "GMT (Greek Maybe Time)" attitude to life that allows you to relax, and get away from the rat race. And apart from anything else - the view from the terrace at the Apollo is worth the price of the holiday alone - sitting there staring out over the bay your troubles melt away - now who in their right mind would swap that for a bigger bathroom and 2 sinks !
Apollo might not work for some people , but it certainly works for us. We don't get to Skiathos as much as we'd like, or to Apollo, and we're looking forward to being able to get back there again soon - and when we do - we hope to hell that it hasn't changed to accomodate the people who want bigger bathrooms !

My wife and I stayed here for the first time last August and certainly were NOT disappointed. In fact, we are excited about booking our holiday here this year, which has prompted me to write this review.

We literally had the time of our lives last year.

Our apartment overlooked the sea with breathtaking panoramic views. The apartment was clean (very important to me), the kitchenette is equiped for snack cooking (who wants to cook a full-on meal whilst on holiday!) and although the bathroom was compact, this was not a huge problem and we had constant hot water.

Captain and Dunia (the proprietors) were extremely warm and welcoming and supported by efficient staff. Captain is an intelligent man and we enjoyed learning from him the history of the island - with interesting stories of Greek mythology - over a chilled bottle of beer, or two! Dunia was always busying herself cooking and looking after guests in general although we managed a beer with her on a couple of occasions when we learned tips on Greek cooking. You really have to treat yourself to her cooking. You will find the portion size and standard of cooking absolutely amazing and will certainly fill your tummy!

The poolside area had the most comfortable loungers with clean bathing towels daily. Poolside snacks were available all day.

The local facilities were great too and Villa Apollon is on the bus route (no tekking along dusty side roads). There is a water taxi which was great fun as you get to see Skiathos Town by sea.

I could go on and on about this fantastic place but you really need to go there to experience it for yourself. We had the most relaxed and enjoyable holiday ever and nothing was too much trouble for our hosts.

Villa Apollon, Skiathos has what it takes to make the perfect holiday.

After reading the many reviews we were very disappointed and upset with Villa Apollon.

We appreciate people have different expectations but please read ALL the reviews and read between the lines...

Worst holiday ever on such a magnificent island. Would not recommend and would certainly not stay again.

Just arrived back from a wonderful holiday in Skiathos such a lovely island .Stayed at the Villa Apollon arrived to rain and had a few dodgy days weather wise but it did not spoil the holiday .The owners Captain and Dounia made our stay very welcoming nothing is too much trouble for them we met some lovely people during the course of our stay at the Villa Apollon who we shared some enjoyable times with.
We stayed in a two bedded studio which was small but well equiped encluding free air con and safe, all apartments have fantastic sea views. The beach is just a few minutes
away down a steep hill so not so good for the less able but they have water taxis which take you in to town and a bus stop a minute up the road. There are some lovely tavernas to eat in but the Captains food would take some beating . All in all a wonderful place to stay and relax in and cant wait to return next year.

We chose Villa Apollon based on the overwhelmingly positive comments on tripadvisor and also because we wanted to avoid larger commercial hotels, but we were disappointed. I realise this contradicts the majority of reviews on here and I can understand why this kind of holiday might appeal to some people, but it just didn't do it for us.

There are around 15 rooms in total. We stayed in a one-bedroomed studio which was very basic and looked rather dated. Ours had cracked foor tiles, a tiny unappealing bathroom and a broken blind. In my opinion they weren't particularly clean either. Our balcony was swept/mopped twice in total. On a positive note, the room was well equipped with iron, microwave, plenty of utensils, crockery etc. We also found having a fridge a real benefit. The whole place was winding down despite there being several weeks left before the end of the season which meant that it was up to guests to get their own (grubby) sunlounge covers and some of the food was not available. There was no evidence that the pool area was cleaned in the week we were there and we did notice dog poo on one occasion. Although Captain and Dounia were always available, we did not experience much in the way of hospitality. We asked Dounia if she would mind reserviing us a table at the Windmill and were given a map with the phone number on and told to ring them ourselves. Our flight wasn't until late afternoon so on our last day we planned to relax by the pool before checking out at the designated time (midday) but were asked to vacate early to make way for incoming guests which left us feeling uncomfortable.

The general location of Villa Apollon is good, being only a few minutes by bus from Skiathos town. However, it is right next to the main road and, although this wasn't a problem at night, it was very noticeable through the day. The views are lovely and it was only a few minutes walk to the nearest beach / supermarket / bakery etc. We got the water taxi a few times (2.50 each way). We only ate at Villa Apollon once and the food was reasonable, but we preferred to eat out in Skiathos town where there are some lovely places. Folio, Amfiliki and especially the Windmill were all really good.

Skiathos itself is lovely with lots of beaches and really good public transport. We didn't hire a car but found it very easy and cheap to get around using the local bus service. We went to Skopelos/Alonissos for a day trip which we really enjoyed. I loved Skiathos old town which is full of winding cobbled streets and, although it is touristy, it remains charming and manages to avoid feeling like a resort.

To conclude, we didn't feel Villa Apollon represented particularly good value for money (we paid 65 euros/night which in peak season rises to 110 euros). Hotel Paradise (around 1km away) charges roughly the same amount but looks much nicer. Kivotos Suites further along from Hotel Paradise was only 15 euros/night more and the difference was incomparable, although a car would be necessary. We also realised that we prefer staying in slightly larger hotels as we felt Villa Apollon was rather cliquey. If we returned to Skiathos we would stay in the same vicinity but definitely won't be going back to Villa Apollon.
