This is our 2nd stay at La Piscine. We don’t usually return to the same resort/hotel, but we had such a fantastic time there in August 2007, we said we would return like so many of the guests. In fact we enjoyed it so much again this time that we’ve just booked for 2010.
On arrival it was as if we had only been away a few weeks, we had a lovely welcome from Olga and Irini at the front desk. Then when we went into the pool area for our welcome drink. Andreas came over to greet us and he even remembered our names from our previous visit. We then had a warm welcome from Eleni and Vasilis (the owners of the hotel).
Over 2 weeks we had a fantastic time and couldn’t fault anything. Eleni and Vasilis were around most of the day and night and they promote a really friendly atmosphere at the hotel, nothing is too much trouble for anyone. Andreas is an absolute star, he works so hard and always with a smile on his face. The waiters in the bar area Denis, Elios & Dean were new to us as the staff have changed from last time, but they were brilliant. Dean makes the best Mojito and Flying cocktails. We found the bar prices were quite reasonable for a 4 star hotel so we often had a few drinks there before and after a night out.
Our room was facing the back this time ‘209’ and we had our own balcony facing a little garden which was fine. It was always kept very clean by the maids and there were lots of finishing touches as mentioned in previous posts. The beds were very comfortable and there was plenty of storage space. Airconditioning was switched on by request.
We were on a B&B basis but often ate lunch in the hotel as it was so nice to just chill by the pool. We are party animals ourselves so often missed breakfast, but when we did venture down before 10.30am we found it was great, there was a good selection of food and they even had British sausages. We also stayed for the barbeque and Greek nights; there was a small charge of 10 euros for the BBQ and Greek evening which was well worth the price. The chef Steven was a barbeque master and the meat he cooked was beautiful. The hotel also hosted a few complimentary BBQ’s as well and there were either live bands or Greek singers which we really enjoyed for a change from western music.
The pool area at La Piscine has a good sized pool, with really comfortable sunbeds and chairs. The hotel provide towels on the beds and they are changed throughout the day as people move away. There is a shower to the side of the bar, rather than on the poolside, but this was not really a problem. If you want to cool off there are conservatory areas with big comfy sofas dotted around the pool and bar area. The flowers and artwork dotted around the hotel add to the ambiance of the place. The hotel is geared more for adults really (not a problem for us) as there are no activities or swimming areas for children.
We didn’t encounter any problems getting a bed even arriving down as late as 11am. With regards to the sunbed incident in the previous article. I saw what happened on the poolside that afternoon, a couple had actually left their beds to watch TV in the bar and had been away for a good few hours, the couple that took the beds thought that the people had gone - that was it, just a misunderstanding - there was no big scene.
Skiathos town itself is very chic, the old town area is great to explore. In the day you can take a ferry to the other islands or boat taxis to beaches. We love the island of Tsougria, the boat taxi leaves from the harbour at 10 & 11am and picks you up at 4, 5 or 6pm cost is 10 euros per person return. Beware though and make sure you take water and refreshments as Tsougria has only one little Taverna on the beach. The day we went it was closed due to some problem with the greek authorities and most of the people were rationing water by the end of the day.
It's also very easy to get the bus around the different resorts and beaches on the island. Although, we were too busy relaxing at La Piscine to go anywhere this time.
There is a massive choice of restaurants and snack places in town. There no tacky bars or people pestering you to buy their goods, which is one of my pet hates on holiday. The restaurant prices vary depending on what you want, fish can be quite expensive, but we found it very reasonable for the quality of food and wine we had.
Our favourite restaurant was LYCHNARIA, this was recommended by the owner of La Piscine - Dimitri and his wife Anna made us feel so welcome and the food was amazing. We also liked AMFILIKI for fresh fish (ask La Piscine to book a table for you to get a good spot), LO & LA and BONAPARTE. There is a little old windmill restaurant called Mylio at the end of the runway if you want to watch the planes coming in; they do great pork chops and chicken.
All in all we had a fantastic holiday and can’t wait to go back next year !!
